BillsZone Camp Report 8/3/2004

by Michael J. Thomas

Today was another slow day for practice. The players practiced in full pads for the second day in a row and had some nice contact. They started out by working in their individual units, and then did the 7-on-7 drill and 11-on-11. The special teams even took time out to practice field goals.

After their stretches, the players split into groups (their individual units). The quarterbacks and running backs worked on blocking and handing off the ball. The Offensive and Defensive lines worked on blocking, and used pads to help block. Also, the Linebackers worked on tackling. And finally, the DBs worked on catching the balls and the receivers worked on their routes. Plus, Mike Hollis was working with the kickers. This lasted for a little while and then the groups starting working together. Drew Bledsoe practiced with the linebackers rushing him and trying to get the ball out in time.

Field goal kicking was the next thing on the menu. Rian Lindell practiced kicking field goals from the 20-yard line and they were working on their blocking skills. He was a perfect 4 for 4. Mike Shafer was blocked on his first try. He made the second one, but then Rashad Baker came in and blocked the 3rd one. One the very last play of this drill, the whole team taunted Lindell and made a lot of noise to mess up his concentration. He made the kick. It was about 35 yards.

After the field goal drills, the quarterbacks worked out with the wide receivers and tight ends, and the DBs were trying to cover them. Josh Reed dropped the first pass from Bledsoe. Coy Wire made a nice play and batted the ball down from Ryan Neufeld. On the next play, Lawrence Richardson held Josh Reed, so he was unable to get the pass from Bledsoe. Jason Peters made a nice catch in the middle of the field, but he also dropped one later on. Two players made leaping grabs and caught the ball, Kevin Beard and Clarence Coleman. Right before the horn ended this drill, Jonathan Smith turned on his jets and burned Jabari Greer for a 35 yard touchdown.

The next drill was the 7-on-7. Bledsoe found Eric Moulds for 5 yards in the middle and then found Bobby Shaw for 10. Travis Brown threw a nice screen to Ryan Neufeld for 4 yards. Joe Burns ran up the middle for 7 yards. When Drew got back on the field, he threw a pass that was INTERCEPTED by Nate Clements. You could tell the defense was excited. They were cheering and then they all gave him high-fives on the sideline. Following that play, Bledsoe found Lee Evans in the middle of traffic and hit him for a 8-yard gain. Bledsoe ended this drill with a pass to Mark Campbell for about 5 yards, but Lawyer Milloy was waiting for him and laid a nice hit on him. JP Losman continued to struggle and had 3 incomplete passes. Two of them were overthrown and the third one was too high for Tim Euhus to get.

The Bills then finished off the day with a long 11-on-11 drill. The defensive line had Denney and Schobel on the ends with Pat Williams and Ron Edwards in the middle. On the first play, Drew Bledsoe had a nice pump fake to fool the defense and hit Josh Reed in the numbers for 12 yards. Bledsoe also threw a screen to Daimon Shelton for 7 yards. Willis had a nice run for 6 yards and Takeo Spikes laid a hit on him. It looked like it didn't even faze him.

Travis Brown was next up and found Bobby Shaw for 8 yards. He also threw a couple of screens. Then, he had a Rob Johnson moment. He was sitting in the pocket and the blitz came, he definitely would have been sacked by Keith McKenzie if they could hit the quarterback. JP Losman came back in and underthrew Cedric Bonner. He then threw a screen to Isaac Mitchell. He ended his series with a beautiful pass to Sam Aiken. Aiken caught the 6 yard pass and then ran another 18 yards. Bledsoe came back under center and threw a 6 yard pass to Mark Campbell. Lawyer Milloy laid him down, literally. On the next play, Travis Henry was stopped at the line of scrimmage by both London Fletcher and Takeo Spikes.

Moulds then made another great catch and ran for about 12 yards. Willis came back and pounded up the middle for 6 yards and the pads were smacking against eachother. Eric Moulds then met Nate Clements, right after catching a 4 yard pass from Bledsoe. Travis Brown came back and was almost sacked on the first play. It was a blitz by Jason Gildon. He then was almost intercepted by Josh Stamer, but Stamer dropped it.

The starters came back and Henry had two nice runs in a row. One of them for 12 yards, after making a nice cut. Bledsoe then hit Moulds twice with an 11 yard pass and a 13 yarder. McGahee was back under center and ran towards the sideline for a gain of 8. The session and day ended with a few plays by JP Losman. First he avoided a pass rush and gained 12 yards, then after Rashad Baker stopped Isaac Mitchell for a short loss, JP scrambled for 10 yards. The rain started to come down and the players stretched and headed into the locker room.

Here's a couple tidbits that I noticed today:

1. Mike Williams was again a no show. He was nowhere to be found on the practice field.

2. JP Losman is struggling with the playbook, I think. I'll give him a little slack, because most of the rookies struggle in the beginning, and he seems to be having problems with his accuracy and communication to the other receivers. However, when he is on. He is ON! He has a great arm and is very good at avoiding the pass rush.

3. Jason Gildon looks like he is getting used to the new playbook and the new packages, but I think he could possibly unseat Jeff Posey. He looks really good out there and might be the missing weapon that we needed for our defense last year.

4. In Takeo Spikes' mind, the season is already here. He is extremely pumped up and he looks like he wants to take someone's head off when he makes a tackle. The coaches even have to calm him down once in a while.

5. It's nice to see some coaching out there. All of the coaches are constantly working with the players and telling them things if they do something wrong. It looks much different than the old coaching staff.

6. Izell Reese is the current starter at Free safety, but they have rotated Coy Wire in with the starters.

7. Props to the players for staying behind and signing autographs today, even with a light rain, the players still signed autographs for the fans. The rookies are always signing each day, but this time the Defensive lineman stayed behind to sign and even a couple others. Ralph Wilson also made an appearance and then signed autographs for a good 15 minutes or so, after practice.

Well, that's about it. It was another great day for camp. The weather was hot and sticky, but it then as the sky darkened, there was a nice breeze. The rain came down for about 5-10 minutes, but it was a light rain and the players practiced right through it. I'll be back at camp tomorrow night for the night practice and will try to get some kind of report on the site, tomorrow night.
