BillsZone Camp Report 8/5/2004

by Michael J. Thomas

Bills Training Camp Gallery Thursday, August 5, 2004
Today was great day for the Buffalo Bills practice. The weather was nice and sunny outside and there was even a breeze. The players practiced without pads and had little to no contact. They started out by working in their individual units, and then did the 7-on-7 drill, 11-on-11 drill, and then ending with a 2-minute drill. The special teams even took time out to practice punting and punt blocking.

Just like last time, after their stretches, the players split into groups (their individual units). The quarterbacks tossed the ball around. The receivers practiced running their routes and catching the ball. The running backs practiced making cuts and trying to hold onto the ball, while the coach tries to get them to fumble. They also spent some time catching passes from the quarterbacks. Meanwhile, the offensive linemen were working with the tight ends on blocking drills. On the other field, the defensive players were doing their own stuff. The defensive backs were practicing catching passes, while the defensive line worked with the linebackers. Brian Moorman also spent time kicking the ball into the air, using high, but short punts.

The next drill was a special teams drill. Brian Moorman lined up to punt the ball, while the coverage teams lined up at the line of scrimmage. Moorman did a nice job booting them. He punted between 40-50 yards each time. Nate Clements, Antonio Brown and even Josh Reed were back there catching the punts.

Following the special teams drills, the units went back to work again. The quarterbacks were split into two groups (throwing to the backs and TEs, and also throwing to the wide receivers)and rotated with both of them. The linebackers were trying to cover the RBs and TEs, while the DBs were trying to cover the wide receivers. Also, at the one end of the field, the defensive linemen were doing blocking drills and trying to get around Coach Krumrie.

After the drills were done, the team went into a 11-on-11 scrimmage against eachother. Drew Bledsoe started right off with a screen to Travis Henry, however Henry dropped it. Bledsoe did however find Bobby Shaw for 7 yards. Nate Clements then made a nice play to stop Eric Moulds from getting the ball. The following play was a 5 yard run by Willis McGahee right up the middle. Travis Brown then came under center and would have been sacked by a Safety blitz on his first play. Brown was then intercepted by Kevin Thomas. His third play was overthrown a little bit, and Coleman couldn't get it. McGahee helped Brown out, by catching his last pass for 4 yards. JP Losman came in next and did much better than Brown. He hit Jason Peters for 5 yards, and also threw a nice looking pass to Jerel Myers for 10 yards. RB Shaud Williams also had a nice run for 7 yards right up the middle.

The team then practiced 7-on-7. Bledsoe threw a screen to Travis Henry for 8 yards. He then found Bobby Shaw for 15 yards. He ended the drill with a pair of 6 yard passes, one to Henry and the other to Moulds. Travis Brown was then given another chance. On his first play, he found Sam Aiken for a 10 yard gain. Brown then threw a sideline pass to Jerel Myers. His best play was the pass to Rod Trafford, over the middle of the field for about 20 yards. The starters came back and the defense started with two great plays. First Takeo Spikes forced an incomplete pass with very good coverage on Henry. The next play, Nate Clements knocked the ball away from Eric Moulds. Bledsoe made it up with two nice completions, one to Bobby Shaw for 11 yards and then the second was a sideline pass to Willis McGahee that he caught and ran for 8 yards. JP Losman came back after that and threw a sweet 6 yard pass to Antonio Brown, followed by a 4 yard pass to Jerel Myers. He also had a perfect pass to Clarence Coleman, but Coleman dropped it. Greg Zolman came in and did nothing. He overthrew and underthrew the receiver in two tries.

The team went back to the 11-on-11 drill and focused on running this time. Travis Henry ran around the right side for 4 yards, then he ran up the middle for 7. On the next play, Bledsoe looked like the Bledsoe of last year, he held onto the ball too long and he would've been sacked. Nate Clements then made another great play and tipped the ball away from Josh Reed. Willis McGahee then came in and had two solid runs, one for 12 yards around the left tackle, and the other one for 6 yards right up the middle. Travis Brown was next up and he had two great plays. One of them was a 20 yard pass to Clarence Coleman, and the next one to Sam Aiken. Aiken made a sweet play and leaped for the ball for a gain of 15 yards. Shaud Williams then ran around the side for a gain of 8 yards. JP Losman came back under center to finish this drill and started with a fake handoff and with a very nice 25 yard bomb to Clarence Coleman. Isaac Mitchell was stopped at the line of scrimmage on the next play. JP Losman finished his day with a keeper for 11 yards.

The final drill of the day was a fun one to watch. The Bills practiced the 2 minute drill. Drew Bledsoe started out solidly with a 25 yard pass to Eric Moulds, then he threw a 6 yard pass to Bobby Shaw. Travis Henry then got another yard or so with a run on 2nd down. However, on 3rd down, the offense looked kind of like last year's offense. Bledsoe had 3rd and short with about 50 seconds to go. He chose to throw a pass into the endzone, but he overthrew Eric Moulds and the team was forced to take the field goal. Travis Brown came in and proved why he should not stay at backup for too much longer. He had two incomplete passes in a row, and then lucked out with a 45 yard bomb to Sam Aiken. Aiken made another impressive play by jumping up to catch it. Brown then overthrew Coleman and capped the drive off with an interception by Terrence McGee.

Here's a couple tidbits that I noticed today:

1. Sam Adams is still out with a hamstring injury, and in his place is not Oliver Gibson, but rather Ron Edwards. He's doing a pretty good job with it, too.

2. JP Losman is starting to get better, while Travis Brown gets worse. I think it will only be a matter of time until Travis Brown loses his job to JP, especially if he keeps struggling.

3. The offense was off a little bit today. I don't know if it was just the defense getting better or what, but they seemed a little bit off. The receivers dropped a lot of passes and the throws were definitely off quite a few times.

4. There was a lot of different formations today. There were a few 3 and 4 receiver sets, plus we even got to see Willis and Travis in the same backfield. Willis got the toss in the double back formation and did a good job with it.

5. Ryan Neufeld was used as a Fullback a couple times and is doing a pretty good job at tight end, but Jason Peters still excites me. I think he could become one of the backups and make the team.

6. Nate Clements was the star of the defense today. He made a lot of nice plays and had good coverage on the receivers.

7. Sam Aiken was probably the star of the offense. He continues to shine and it looks like there is a chance he could bump Bobby Shaw to 5th string and may make Bobby Shaw a surprise cut.

8. The offensive line signed autographs today and JP Losman stayed out there to sign again. He's getting a lot of fans really fast. He has a great personality and is a nice guy to chat with. Also, Ralph Wilson Jr. stopped by the bus stop to chat with the fans and sign a few autographs. He looks really good for his age. He was even walking around on campus today.

Well, that's about it. It was another fun day at camp. Let's hope the weather stays like it was today. There should be a lot more people showing up if it does. I will back at camp tomorrow morning and afternoon for the two sessions against the Browns and will have both reports on the site tomorrow. Stay Tuned!
