That was fast. I think we can safely say the Bills are out of playoff contention. It’s painfully obvious that the Bills are not a playoff-caliber team. Sure, they’ve lost three of their four games by a combined eight points. Sure, the defense has been banged up. We could make excuses all day. The fact is that the Bills simply don’t know how to win. They don’t have a competent leader at quarterback who can lead the last-minute comeback. With that said, this writer is going to say something controversial. It might even make some Bills fans upset. I feel dirty even thinking about it, but here goes:I hope the Buffalo Bills keep losing.
No, I don’t hope they lose indefinitely; just until a few things are accomplished. Reaffirming Bill Parcells’ genius aside, let’s take a closer look at five reasons the Bills will be better off for losing.
First, losing will eventually force our coaches to play Willis McGahee. This is one of the most puzzling pieces to the Bills season so far.
By all reports, McGahee looked incredible in practice last week, and he played very well when he came into the game for a brief stint on Sunday. I’ve always liked Henry. His toughness is deserving of a medal. I love how he grinds it out for tough yards. He’s a good back, but he’s simply not as talented as Willis.
For those who defend Henry by saying he's a 1400-yard back, I’d contend that 75% of the Running Backs in the league could be 1400-yard backs if they touched the ball as much as Henry has in the past couple of years. Don't get me wrong - I like Henry, but he's a one-dimensional back. McGahee will be a game-breaker, multi-threat type of back. He’s the kind of talent who can carry a team on his shoulders and make big plays. Let’s get our future ready for the future.
Next, losing will force the benching and eventual release of Drew Bledsoe. This is great news for all Bills fans whether they know it or not. I still can't believe there are any Drew believers out there. Is it all statue’s fault? No. Among other things, I blame the coaching for not letting him open it up in the first couple of games. Yesterday, we saw what can happen when Drew has some time and some deep speed.
Sorry Drew, it’s too late. You have all the confidence of a fawn on I-90. And most Bills fans have lost all confidence in you.
Third, with the benching of Drew comes the emergence of JP. A few more losses will guarantee that JP Losman gets his feet wet once he's healthy. If this trend of losses continues and JP still doesn’t get a shot this season, there is something dreadfully wrong with the management of this team. Once we're out of contention and JP is healthy, he must start!
Fourth, hopefully it will become abundantly clear to the Bills that they must address the offensive line in the offseason. Many thought the line was a clear need after last season. Apparently, Donohoe thought a coaching change would make all the difference.
Tom, the best coaching in the world won’t make talent-less lard into a great offensive line. I think if I was the GM, I'd spend just about every draft pick in the next two years on offensive linemen.
Finally, losing should turn up the heat on Donohoe. Once hailed as a genius by Bills fans for his free-agent signings, his stock has fallen. The Bills have not enjoyed one winning season under Donohoe. In fact, the Bills have the third-worst record in the league since 2000.
Tom Donahoe has done a great job of alienating those who praised him early in his Buffalo career. Good moves by the President and General Manager in the past were cancelled out by snide comments and know-it-all remarks, not to mention terrible coaching and questionable draft choices. This is nothing a few winning seasons and a couple of playoff appearances couldn’t fix. But that’s not going to happen with the current Bills team.
Unfortunately, it appears as though Donohoe is the boss in Buffalo. It’s too bad because Ralph deserves better than this. When do I think Ralph will wake up and get rid of Donohoe? It won’t happen until fans stop showing up. Money talks; and Mr. Wilson will be hearing a lot less of it if the Bills are losing and the same cast of characters are starting.
Once all of the above is accomplished, I wouldn't mind seeing the Bills win some games.
