Coming into this game against Arizona, I had the two for one combo. Angel Kevin on my left shoulder, coupled with Devil Kevin on the right: “It can’t get much worse than the Baltimore game,” said Angel Kevin.
“You’ve been saying that for a while now,” retorts Devil Kevin.
“But Arizona is historically a weak team with no hope.” Angel replied
“Buffalo could be the second coming of the Cardinals,” Devil Kev snapped
Then I interjected by telling them both to shut up and watch the game.

For about two and a half quarters I sat there annoyed that the Bills were becoming that infamous weak team with no hope. They were the second coming of the Cardinals. There wasn’t a lot of action going on. The Bills were out front thanks to their special teams for scoring a touchdown. Buffalo squandered their first drive that started inside the Arizona 40. They punted time and time again. The run defense gave up 5 yards a carry to Emmitt Smith. This was all following the standard pattern of making washed-ups look like the superheroes they once were. Those runs were called back primarily because the Cardinals turned out to be less disciplined then the Bills. Who knew that was possible?

But somewhere in that third quarter, it started to feel like a real Bills game. The excitement was building. The stadium lights were on at 3pm. People were cheering. The players believed in themselves. There were smiles all around the stadium. The shout song meant something to people again. It honestly felt like making out with the girl you broke up with two months earlier. The old flames were alit and the spark was back, albeit for a short time, but it was back.. True, when you wake up the next morning, its back to the same old routine, but you enjoy the warmth while it’s there..

A lot of things went Buffalo’s way Sunday. The Eric Moulds TD that was challenged, however, the jumbotron guy elected to show the replay for once. That was huge. Another thing so typically Buffalo happened to the Cardinals instead of us. Dennis Green challenged the ruling on the field because he thought Nate Clements touched the ball on a punt in the second quarter. The Cardinals had downed it at the 1 yard line, but instant replay (which they didn’t show us) showed that Clements never touched the ball and that the Cardinals player was standing on the goal line. Re-kick! I should have known at that point that the Bills had it in the bag.

There were several empty seats in the stadium for this game as the sell out streak came to a screeching halt. It was kind of sad that our one big blow out victory went to a pretty sparse crowd. I do have to admit, I haven’t written an article after a convincing Bills win. You’ll have to bear with me as I work out the kinks, I’m new at this.

• So Mark “I’ll run 15+ yards for the first down late in Super Bowl 25”Ingram was arrested for stealing a credit card. He is being held in a federal prison. Is there any justice in this world? Buffalo brings in class acts like Jimbo, Andre, Drew, and we get no championships. Other teams bring in criminals like Ray Lewis (Super Bowl MVP), Mark Ingram (see above), Ty Law (Mr. Ecstasy at the border) and they get everything. Yes I am bitter.
• In the spirit of “different strokes”, why have none of us screamed “What you talkin’ ‘bout Willis?” Or better yet when he really kicks it up a gear, “Dat’s what I’m talkin’ ‘bout Willis” Can you imagine 72,000 fans screaming that after a big run? Yeah, neither can I. In fact, I’m not sure if we should be applauded for not going the clichéd route.
• Remember a couple weeks ago when I said, “We’ll be happy for the Red Sox when they scam themselves into a championship.” I lied. I’m angry. Stupid Boston fans. They are turning out to be more like an older sibling now. They get everything. I got nothing. Marsha, Marsha, Marsha!!! And I swear, if my Boston friends start chanting, “Who’s your older sibling.” I promise, like Indigo Montoya from Princess Bride, “there will be blood tonight”
• On the first of Nate Clements’ two big returns, there was a designed play that made no sense to me. Kevin Thomas was coming around for the reverse kickoff return. The problem was that Kevin Thomas was at the line blocking at the start of the play. So he ran 40 yards, pushing and shoving a player and then is expected to get the ball and run the other way another 40 yards? I couldn’t believe the Cardinals fell for that. When he came around the corner, wheezing, I was like, “This is a stupid play. Who would stop and think KT has the ball?” Anyways, way to go Cardinals. Way to go.
• The Bills Bandwagon seems a lot like the US Financial Indices these days. A lot of volume while size is decreasing, no one seems to know what needs to be fixed but we can agree something needs to be done, but we can all agree when we look back at 1998 and 1999 we think of better times.
• Question of the week: If you have answers to this, you’ll have ended years of frustration for my dad. The question is why do the officials always say “prior to the snap” before a false start? Is there any other kind of false start? It just seems that if you are “false starting” during a snap, you’re right on time. Keep the play going, I say.
