Brandt's Rant: Zoned Out on Mike Brown

by Stephen Brandt

a_brown_i.jpgThe preceding game between the Buffalo Bills and the Cincinnati Bengals got me to thinking about each team's GM. Let me preface this rant by saying that I don’t know, nor have I ever talked to Mike Brown, so I don’t know if he’s a good or bad guy, but damn he sucks at his job. There are teams and players who are hated, and rightfully so, but none are hated more than Bengal’s President Mike Brown. How can you excuse a team that has basically sucked as bad as they have with him in charge? He presides over the team, which his father (Paul) coached, and he has run it into the ground.

Why is he still holding a job? Case in point, type Mike Brown and Cincinnati, you will come up with many pages of “Mike Brown Sucks” or “Mike Brown is the reason” or “Mike Brown must quit” Heck there’s even petitions out there to get him fired.

Fans of the Buffalo Bills are lucky, Ralph Wilson knows how to put a winning team on the field year in and year out. Ok, so we have hit some bumpy roads, but the Bills haven’t been down for too long. Mostly the Bills have drafted right and hired the right coaches to make the talent succeed. That is something you cannot say about the Bengals. It’s no secret why they are called the Bungals. Once again, why does he have a job? Why does he stink so bad? Some Febreeze would help. He must have incriminating photos of someone important in the NFL that they are afraid of being made public.

Personal feelings aside, let’s look at some statistics why he stinks so bad. The Bengals have had twelve straight losing seasons. Think about that. Twelve straight. Damn that’s bad. His record as GM/Owner 69/153 for a .450 winning percentage. Well isn’t that a great winning percentage? Let’s put him in the Hall Of Fame. He must think that he is doing something well, why else does he still have a job?

ickeywoods.gifPart of the reason why this has happened is that he hasn’t put in the proper people to make his team better. The 2002 draft, 1 player is starting, and Dorsch a KICKER is a backup. Yikes! He’s drafted a Baylor quarterback (you should lose your job with that), Akili Smith, David Klinger, Peter Warrick, and Big Daddy Wilkinson. Damn, that sucks. He has whole drafts that didn’t make it to the next year. Now to be fair they are getting better with their drafts, Carson Palmer might turn out to be very good. And he drafted Chad Johnson, Corey Dillon, Takeo Spikes (thank you), James Francis, and Icky Woods. But half of his drafts have been real stinkers.

And the other thing that is really bad is to look at who he has hired as head coach over the past twelve years (excluding Marvin Lewis) David Shula 1992-1996, Bruce Coslet 1996-2000, Dick LeBeau 2000-2002. They are not definitely the world’s greatest coaches. None of those coaches strike fear in the eyes of the opponents. Maybe they have turned the corner with Lewis.

Just imagine if the Bills were like this. We would be the laughing stock of the league. It's sad to see a franchise developed by a legend has come to. The NFL has to do something about these owners who don't care, and really don't wnat to do anything with their teams. It's not good for the NFL. Maybe they should be contracted.
