Bills Might Get Brick At Number Eight
Picking eighth, my initial thought was that Bills fans are delusional thinking that Brick is going to fall all the way down to number eight. He's the irrefutable top lineman in the draft and some scouts say he may be the next Walter Jones. But a funny thing happened as I studied the draft position and needs of the seven teams selecting before the Bills. I started noticing scenarios where Brick could end up in Buffalo.

Talented linemen aren't lighting up the draft marquee
The Buffalo Bills can get plenty of help on their offensive and defensive lines in the draft in April. However, it doesn't look like they will be drafting a left tackle with the eighth overall pick.

Extra ticket revenue too little for Bills to hire top coaches
It is impossible to criticize a slight hike in Buffalo Bills ticket prices for the 2006 season when they are still are the cheapest seats on average in the NFL.
Unfortunately, it seems quite likely that owner Ralph Wilson Jr. isn't using any of that added revenue to hire a head coach and coordinators with glowing credentials and hefty salaries.

The coach who helped turn St. Louis Rams quarterback Marc Bulger into an NFL star is joining the Buffalo Bills. And he won't need a tour of the facilities.

Bills' hiring of Jauron could work out
Monday, for better or worse, the Buffalo Bills officially named former Chicago Bears and Detroit Lions head coach Dick Jauron as their 14th head coach in franchise history. In his formal introduction to the city of Buffalo, Jauron impressed. The 55-year old defensive specialist was poised in his news conference and didn't pull any punches about what his goals were.

Soft-spoken. Low-key. Unassuming. As advertised, Dick Jauron is all those things. In a league of screamers, he brings a quiet demeanor as 14th head coach of the Buffalo Bills.
Quarterback is Job One on Bills Drive
My first impression of Dick Jauron? He's not an inspiring public speaker. I don't believe he cracked a smile during his first news conference Monday as the Bills' head coach. He talked about passion and it sounded like he was reciting a grocery list. Ralph Wilson sounded like Chris Rock by comparison.

I think we can only go up. "They have a lot of issues to address and holes to fill and Jauron said that every position is up for competition and I like that. We'll have to be patient."
Levy liked what he saw in Jauron

Levy Might Be Best Available Candidate
During Friday's news conference announcing the resignation of Mike Mularkey after two seasons as head coach of the Buffalo Bills, owner Ralph Wilson offered his criteria for a replacement.
Bills' Evans could soon resemble Panthers' Smith
During Sunday's NFC Divisional playoff round between the Carolina Panthers and Chicago Bears, it was fairly evident that the best player on the field was Panthers Pro Bowl receiver Steve Smith. Despite his 5'9 stature, Smith emerged as the NFL's best pass-catcher in 2005 and is a great receiver for other smallish players to mimic. After two full seasons of watching Buffalo Bills former first-rounder Lee Evans, it's clear to me that the ex-Wisconsin star could soon experience the same caliber of success that Smith has.
Challenges await Bills' strong business base
The promised overhaul of the Buffalo Bills front office as announced by owner Ralph Wilson Jr. proved once more the command the franchise maintains over the community. On Jan. 4, with a live multimedia audience looking on and listening in, the team's founder confirmed the dismissal of Tom Donahoe as president and general manager and, hours later, the retention of head coach Mike Mularkey.

Haslett, Sherman would fit in
The Buffalo Bills have been trying to replace Marv Levy as coach for seven seasons, so with the resignation of Mike Mularkey, Levy the general manager is leading the hunt for his own successful successor.
Levy says he won't coach Bills
Let the coaching search begin.
Buffalo Bills owner Ralph C. Wilson Jr. and General Manager Marv Levy both spoke out to clear up confusion Saturday over their quest to find a new head coach.
Bills' owner was correct to stand his ground with Levy
It's a good thing Wilson remains full of spunk and conviction, that he wasn't driven into a state of resignation by all that has transpired. It's a good thing he had some fight left in him because his old friend and new general manager, Marv Levy, was going on the offensive.
Outpouring of support buoys Ferguson's spirits
Joe Ferguson knew he was a significant part of the history of the Buffalo Bills. He never guessed just how great an impact he made until he was diagnosed with cancer this summer.
No, Levy isn't going to coach
Upon further review, Marv Levy will not coach the Buffalo Bills.
The team's Pro Football Hall of Fame coach will remain in the capacity he was hired for last week, that of general manager/director of football operations, owner Ralph Wilson said on Saturday.

Sherman ought to be the one to replace Mularkey
With Mike Mularkey now out of the picture as the Buffalo Bills' head coach, it's time for GM Marv Levy and team owner Ralph Wilson, Jr. to begin searching for his replacement. There's a laundry-list of names being mentioned as possible successors to Mularkey; none are too promising.

Does he want to be the next head coach of the Bills?
Levy hit with an all-out blitz
In the wake of yesterday's announcement that Bills head coach Mike Mularkey had resigned, GM Marv Levy seems to have wandered out on a career ledge and someone is going to have to talk him down.
The venerable one, the most successful coach in franchise history, when asked point blank if he would consider a return to the sidelines, began a flawless display of skating excellence.
Fans voice their opinion on what the Bills should do
Following the resignation of Mike Mularkey on Thursday, the rumors have begun to swirl. Whether it is 80-year old general manager Marv Levy, former Buffalo Bills defensive coordinator Ted Cottrell, former Green Bay Packers coach Mike Sherman and the most-talked about candidate, former New Orleans Saints coach and ex-Buffalo Bills linebacker — Jim Haslett.
Mularkey timeline
Jan. 14, 2004: After mulling over all the conversations he'd had with prospective coaches, Donahoe made what turned out to be his second big mistake in the coaching marketplace, bypassing men such as Weis, Fassel and Crennel to go with Mularkey, an old crony of his from Pittsburgh.
Levy makes best candidate for vacancy
Over the past 10 days, the Bills have called as many news conferences to announce comings and goings following last season's 5-11 record as they will have had new head coaches in the past seven years — four. It will be five news conferences when Levy announces that, after an exhaustive interview process involving himself, the Pro Football Hall of Famer has concluded that "I'm the best man for the job." He'd be right. And Wilson would have to agree.
Choosing Haslett for Bills makes sense
Kicking off with four reasons why I'd like to see Jim Haslett as head coach of the Buffalo Bills: He's the only candidate you could look in the eye and believe if he said coaching the Bills is his dream job.
Mularkey's exit best for all parties
It was clumsy the way it shook down, and it added to the perception that the Bills are in a state of chaos; the second coming of the Arizona Cardinals. But Mike Mularkey's bombshell decision to resign as Buffalo's coach less than a week after he and owner Ralph Wilson apparently had ironed out their differences should be viewed as a positive.
Haslett is interested, but understands the process
The hottest name grinding the Buffalo Bills' coaching rumor mill is that of Jim Haslett, and for obvious reasons. First and foremost, Haslett is available after being fired by New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson two weeks ago and is looking for work.

Although it's probably not the most popular sentiment among Reed supporters, the voters made the right decision.

Valuing older workers

Return of Familiar Name Produces Unpredictable Future for Buffalo
I'd like to open the first BillStuff of 2006 with a word of thanks to Buffalo Bills owner Ralph Wilson Jr.
By firing Tom Donahoe as the team's president and general manager last week and replacing him with a guy you've probably heard of, Wilson spared the BS coverage team, as well as you, the reader, from enduring a lengthy rehash of one of the creepiest seasons in the franchise's 46-season history.

Levy will add some wisdom to front office
The Buffalo Bills are in their worst shape since the end of the dismal John Rauch coaching era in 1971. Levy deserves chance to prove he’s the right guy at right time
First some perspective. My career covering the Buffalo Bills began in 1973 ... 33 seasons and nine coaches ago. None do I know better and like more — with Lou Saban a distant second — than Marv Levy.
Bills' hire wears like an old tire

Shortly after being introduced as the Buffalo Bills' general manager, Marv Levy decided to come clean about something that happened the last time he interviewed for a job with the team.
Age no obstacle in Levy's return
Let's get past the age thing from the start. It is meaningless. Marv Levy is 80. So what? If he were half as old, the only relevant question would be the same as it is now: Can he successfully lead the football operation of an NFL team?

Donahoe Dismissed

Buffalo Bills owner Ralph Wilson announced at a Wednesday afternoon press conference that team president and general manager Tom Donahoe has been relieved of his duties.
There was speculation that Tom Modrak would succeed Donahoe, but Wilson said Modrak will instead retain his position as assistant general manager while likely assuming an increased workload. "He'll be in charge of scouting and probably more involved in the operation of the club," Wilson said. Head coach Mike Mularkey's fate with the club, meanwhile, appears far less sealed.
Donahoe had been with the Bills since January of 2001 and the club had just one winning record during his five-year tenure. After a 9-7 season in 2004 showed promise, Buffalo floundered to a mark of 5-11 this year.
The Buffalo News and other media outlets in western New York also reported that former head coach Marv Levy may return in some type of capacity within football operations. At some point this week, Buffalo Bills owner Ralph Wilson will meet with beleaguered head coach Mike Mularkey and determine his fate with the team. As of now, Mularkey's fate is up in the air.
Expect plenty of changes for the Bills
This season of high optimism has ended in the wreckage of a 5-11 campaign. That president/general manager Tom Donahoe is gone is a virtual given ... albeit unofficial. But coach Mike Mularkey, with three years remaining on his contract, might just survive ... especially with Sunday’s 30-26 loss to the Jets at the Meadowlands more disappointing than embarrassing.
Bills' denial won't make flaws vanish
You have to give London Fletcher a lot of credit. The Bills middle linebacker never stopped competing this season. He left it on the field, week after disheartening week. But he might have taken one too many hits. During locker cleanout day Monday, Fletcher said the Bills could easily have been 10-6 or 11-5. "You don't blow up a team because of a couple of plays here or there," Fletcher said. A couple of plays away? Sure, and Paris Hilton is a couple of IQ points away from Einstein.

QB puzzle looms as Bills' major challenge
The Buffalo Bills face a huge challenge in solving their quarterback situation for next season. Faith in J.P. Losman's ability to lead the team to victory is very low among his teammates. Just how the Bills are going to address that issue is one of the biggest clouds hanging over the team in the wake of the 2005 season.

History on Bills' side with No. 8 pick
The Buffalo Bills seemed to be behind the eight ball for most of this NFL season, so it is appropriate that they'll have the No. 8 overall pick in the 2006 draft. The only previous Buffalo No. 8 overall was Penn State linebacker Shane Conlan in 1987. It proved to be a wise selection.
Bills likely to cut loose Donahoe this week
President and general manager Tom Donahoe, who has failed to deliver on his promise of building a well-coached playoff team, is expected to be fired by midweek. Assistant GM Tom Modrak is the leading candidate to succeed him.
Losman, Holcomb eager to earn job
In the best interest of the team — and themselves — quarterbacks Kelly Holcomb and J.P. Losman seem to agree that they should participate in an open competition to become the Buffalo Bills' starter in 2006.
A final question: Where do Bills go from here?
Leo: How about as far away as possible? Or to Wal-Mart. I hear there's a sale on for general managers, left tackles and defensive linemen.

Reprise of futility should finish Mularkey
It's been a long, grueling season, and my memory isn't what it used to be. But I swear I've seen this one before. Let's see, Mike Mularkey takes the Bills into the final game of the regular season, against a team with a third-string quarterback, a stable of backup running backs and a depleted roster - and manages to lose.
Spinning their wheels
The Big Picture: Well, at least they'll get a higher draft pick. The Bills capped off one of the most disappointing seasons in franchise history Sunday afternoon with a 30-26 road loss to the lowly Jets. The Bills finished 5-11, one game ahead of the Jets in the AFC East.

McGahee ends in fine form
McGahee hasn't forgotten how to run the ball, as he showed Sunday by gaining 113 yards on 22 carries during the Buffalo Bills' season-ending loss to the New York Jets. It was his first 100-yard day since going for 130 at New England on Oct. 30.
Top kickoff-cover team fails in clutch
The Buffalo Bills went into Sunday's game against the New York Jets with the best kickoff coverage team in the NFL. But the usually impenetrable unit sprang a big leak at the most inopportune time.
Ground To a Halt
The Buffalo Bills closed the book on a miserable season Sunday and are poised this week to embark on a tumultuous offseason.
Justin time to save Jets
When Justin Miller started his high-flying act down the sideline, Buffalo looked on in disgust.
Three INTs give him a franchise record for cornerbacks (10)
In what likely was the cornerback's final game as a Jet, Law intercepted three passes yesterday in a 30-26 victory over the Bills at Giants Stadium. The interceptions gave Law 10 this season, breaking the franchise record for a cornerback of seven set by Johnny Sample in 1968.
Abraham goes the distance
John Abraham got the sack he needed to give him double-digits for the season in the category on which his occupation is based. More importantly, he played all 16 games, had 10 1/2 sacks and dismissed the concern that he can't stay healthy for an entire season.

Mularkey fumbled ball on QB choice
The word on the street was that Buffalo Bills coach Mike Mularkey was invited to Times Square for New Year's Eve. After all, the guy is used to dropping the ball.
Buffalo Bills report card
Quarterbacks: Kelly Holcomb ran hot and cold; mostly cold. He was 23 of 37 for 184 yards and threw two nice touchdown passes. But his season-high four interceptions, the result of inaccurate throws that resulted in tipped balls on three of his picks, doomed Buffalo's chances against a good Jets defense led by cornerback Ty Law, who had three of the thefts. J.P. Losman looked thoroughly miserable in his ski cap.
