1. Miami - DE Chris Long-Virginia
Alex-Though Miami could go a number of ways, including DT Glenn Dorsey, Parcells always appears partial to getting top notch defensive ends to attack. Given that the #1 pick requires a large investment, it is likely that they will prefer to place this investment on a DE, rather than a usually lower paying DT position. Parcells prefers veteran QBs also, and is unlikely to want QB Matt Ryan.
Matt-While Miami has more holes than a block of swiss cheese, there is no better place to start than by obtaining a non-stop pass rusher off the end. Chris Long was among the most productive ends in the NCAA the past two years, and has the pedigree that Parcells will love. His motor will remind fans of a younger Jason Taylor, and he should anchor and lead a Miami pass rush for years to come.
2.St. Louis - DT Glenn Dorsey-LSU
Matt- St. Louis has had terrible luck in the past drafting DT's; however, Dorsey has been a guy who not only played through an injury all season, but was able to be the most dominant DT in college football. He'll bring some much needed consistency to the St. Louis defensive line, and will make teams pay for ignoring him and focusing solely on Leonard Little.
Alex-If there are injury concerns with respect to Glenn Dorsey, St. Louis could look toward the top OT Jake Long. But all odds are that Glenn Dorsey will be the pick for the Rams. While they drafted Carriker at the NT position last year, Carriker has enough versatility to move to DE, and Dorsey will force opponents to contend with a new force on their defensive line.
3. Atlanta -OT Jake Long-Michigan
Alex-OK, here is where our first big disagreement will come. I feel Matt Ryan is the pick, and here's my reasoning. The Falcons lost face, and the ability to compete within their division, when they lost Michael Vick. Though his stats and skill set were not great, he was exciting to watch. As a result, the Falcons have seemed headless, with no leader to take charge and move forward. Enter Matt Ryan. Matt is cool, calm and collected, and will be everything this franchise needs to begin their quest to become competitive again and to put the Vick saga behind them. They won't be able to do everything in one year, but they can start by grabbing a franchise QB that you can usually only get when you pick this high. Other needs for Atlanta are OT and DT. With Dorsey gone, they could go after DT Sedrick Ellis or OT Jake Long also. But more than likely, Atlanta will grab a QB that can be the face of the future for the franchise. Viable candidates for OT and DT can be had in the 2nd and 3rd rounds with candidates such as OT Jeff Otah and DT Andre Fluellan ,or DT DeMario Pressley.
Matt-Atlanta sorely needs help at almost every position, and while many people will say that they should go Matt Ryan here, they may have the short term solution already on the team in veteran Chris Redman. When they provided Redman with time, he played well, and Jake Long will give the team its franchise LT that it so badly covets. It would be a great start to rebuilding this franchise.
Coin Flip Decides the disagreement, and Jake Long is the pick.
4. Oakland-DT Sedrick Ellis-USC
Matt-Oakland needs to get younger on the DL, and while many may think that McFadden would be a likely pick here, Oakland took Micheal Bush last year in hopes of developing him into a future starting back, and they gave Justin Fargas pretty decent money to be their change of pace back. Ellis is flying up depth charts, and can play either DE or DT, depending on the scheme Oakland chooses to use.
Alex-Oakland's major problem last year was their passing game and their run defense. Though some may consider McFadden, the Raiders actually did very well with Fargas gaining over 1000 yrs in only 7 games played. They grabbed Javon Walker to replace Jerry Porter's loss, and now have to hope that Russell continues improving at his decision making at QB. Although the Raiders signed DT Joseph during the offseason and have Tommy Kelly, they have been shown to be somewhat injury prone, and the Raiders need someone consistent on the line that can wreak havoc on offenses. Sedrick Ellis is Oakland's best bet.
5. Kansas City-RB Darren McFadden-Arkansas
Alex-Kansas City is dismayed that Jake Long is gone. Now they have to switch to plan B. They have needs at OL, CB and a 2nd WR. Some options are OT Ryan Clady, CB Dominque Cromartie-Rogers, Mike Jenkins, or WR Limas Sweed perhaps. All are lower valued picks than what the #5 pick would give them, and they would be forced to reach in taking any of those. Should they take a value pick instead? QB Matt Ryan is still available, but their QB Brodie Croyle played well when given a chance, and when complimented by a strong running game that took the pressure off of him. When Larry Johnson went down with injury, however, Croyle struggled to assume the game on his shoulders. In today's day of hard hitting players, many teams have gone to a two back feature to take the pressure off of their current RB, and to provide stability and insurance at the position. Minnesota did it last year, and it worked wonders for them, despite Chester Taylor being a very decent back. This puts them behind on getting their needs fulfilled at OL and CB, but considering anything else would be a reach, the KC Chiefs reluctantly end up choosing RB Darren McFadden.
Matt-While Kansas City needs to help out their OL, they cannot find any reason to pass on the most talented player in this draft. With Holmes one hit away from retirement, and LJ's durability being in question, KC decides to grab a little insurance and somebody to carry the load for their offense. McFadden is a game breaking back, who could quickly propel the Chiefs near the top of the AFC West.
6. Jets-DE Vernon Gholston-Ohio State
Matt-This pick makes perfect sense for the Jets, as they badly need an edge rusher to come down and put pressure on the QB. This is exactly what Gholston excels at. His good speed and size combo should make him a dangerous rush LB in the AFC East, and will continue the process of retooling that defense.
Alex-With the Jets regressing to an anemic rush defense last year, a boost is needed at defensive end. The Jets have shown strong interest in Gholston, and they know that if they do not take him, the Patriots likely will. The silent feud between Mangini and Belichek will only fuel the fires of taking such a prospect.
7. New England-CB Dominique Rodgers Croamartie-Tennessee State
Alex-The Patriots don't have many holes, but with this past offseason, they did lose some players in the secondary, and have to address their aging LB position. After losing not one but two starters at CB, the Patriots opt to go with CB Dominque Rodgers-Cromartie. Though a bit of a risk so high, the small schooler has physical attributes that cannot be denied, and the Patriots will look to make him their next Ty Law.
Matt-New England lost both Asante Samuel and Randall Gay already this offseason, and they need to begin to rejuvenate their defense. No better way then to take the fastest rising defensive player in the draft in Dominique Rodgers-Croamartie. DRC is a potentially dominant shut down CB, whose skill was unparalleled at the DI-AA level.
8. Baltimore-QB Matt Ryan-Boston College
Matt-Baltimore needs to find its QB of the future, and Kyle Boller obviously isn't it. Ryan brings them a gunslinger mentality, and should work well as a building block for an anemic offense. Baltimore gets its franchise QB to go with its already good offensive line.
Alex-The Ravens are ecstatic to have the top signal caller fall to them at #8. Matt Ryan finally brings them a franchise QB that the team can build around. With the strong defense the Ravens have always had, Baltimore finally gets a QB they have been wanting to solidify the offense and take them to a possible championship.
9. Cincinnati-DE Derrick Harvey-Florida
Alex-With the top premier pass rushers off the board, Cincinnati has to examine themselves to find what they really, desperately need. They have a young secondary that needs help, and they require a pass rushing specialist. On the offensive side, Rudi Johnson is still their main workhorse, though they could use a good backup to lighten his load. They have an outstanding O line that only allowed 17 sacks last year. With a pair of 1000 yard receivers, their need here is minimal at best. A TE could also be grabbed at some point later. But more than anything, they need defensive help to solidify their ailing defense. The Bengals reach and grab DE Derrick Harvey.
Matt-For as bad as Cincinnati has been these past couple of years, they have at least had Justin Smith to anchor their defensive line with, but now he has moved on to greener pastures. Harvey has bulked up, and is hoping to become more than just a pass rush specialist. He has also has few character issues.
10. New Orleans-OLB Keith Rivers-USC
Matt-New Orleans needs to continue to build their defense, and while some may think that a CB is in order, what New Orleans could really use would be an athletic OLB to patrol the defensive side of the field. Rivers could be a leader for the Saints defense for years to come.
Alex-NO needs to enhance their defense more. Their offense has thrived with Brees, Reggie Bush and gems like Marques Colston. However, the defense has been average at best. Though they would have liked a stud defender on their D line, they must content themselves with the next best thing. CB and LB are the top 2 positions that can be improved. At CB, they obtained Randall Gay from the Patriots. They also have a good prospect in youngster Usama Young that they drafted last year. On the LB side, they obtained Jonathan Vilma, but could use another top talent to solidify their corps. The Saints do the next best thing, and take the top LB available at 10.
11. Buffalo-WR Devin Thomas-Michigan State
Alex- The Bills can go any number of ways, and unfortunately for them, all will be considered a reach. The best option would be to trade down, and still obtain a viable WR candidate to fill in their #2 WR slot, which became a must have when WR Bryant Johnson signed with the 49ers in the off season. With the top talent gone on most positions of need - namely DT, DE, CB and OLB- the Bills decide to take the best talent available for them at the WR position. Given that they are going to start the WR they choose, it makes sense that their first pick will be one who can come in, start, and help them with their red zone struggles. 3 top picks can be considered. Limas Sweed, Malcolm Kelly and Devin Thomas. The Bills appear to be paying Devin Thomas a lot of attention. They may feel that Limas Sweed and Malcolm Kelly are injury risks due to their current injuries - Kelly has not even been able to workout yet as of mid March. With Sweed's wrist and Kelly's quad problems, Devin Thomas may be the sure, less risky bet to take, if not the most talented of the WRs. Devin Thomas also brings other qualities to the game. Devin has excellent speed, and excels at being dangerous after the catch. With QB Trent Edwards seemingly a West Coast styled sort of QB, the Bills may be looking to provide a lot of short passes, and will require the receivers to do something with the ball afterward. Thomas also excels in Special Teams action. He is adept at kick returns, which could provide insurance if their current returner Terrance McGee is injured. Playing it safe, and perhaps considering him the more rounded WR of the group, the Bills choose WR Devin Thomas.
Matt- I hate Buffalo's drafting position; for the third year in a row, they are stuck between a rock and a hard place. They miss out on all 4 of the top DL prospects, and unless they want to reach badly for Phillip Merling, they are out of luck. They miss out on DRC, who is the top potential CB in the draft, and with the signing of William James, it also makes it unlikely they target Jenkins or Talib here. They are left with the obvious choice of going WR, and are stuck between picking between one guy who has unknown concerns about his knees (Malcolm Kelly), a guy whose wrist was supposed to be healed over 3 months ago and still isn't (Limas Sweed), and a guy with only one year of production (Devin Thomas). I choose Devin Thomas, because he has a clean bill of health, and for his after the catch ability, being a former RB. However, I'm not happy about the selection in the least.
12. Denver-OT Ryan Clady-Boise State
Matt-Denver needs to revamp their OL, and while they do run the ZBS scheme, Clady is versatile and athletic enough to understand the scheme and play in it. Adding a player who some have in the top 5 in Clady to Denver's always strong OL will make for plenty of running room for Travis Henry and Selvin Young.
Alex-Denver suffers from a lack of quality in the middle on the defensive side. But at this point, there is no one they can pick to give them any high value worth a #12 pick. On the offensive side, they struggled with a lack of consistency in the running. Travis Henry is a decent back, but he's not going to be able to do it by himself. Some help is needed on that O line to perform better. Word is that Carolina covets Clady, so don't be surprised if Carolina tries to move up to steal him from Denver (Hear that Overdorf? Keep the lines open with the Panthers and get an easy extra pick out of it). As such, Denver strives to improve their run game and takes OT Ryan Clady.
13. Carolina-OT Chris Williams-Vanderbilt
Alex- Carolina is having trouble on the O line, and desperately needs some Tackle help. Ryan Clady is their preferred candidate, but with him having been taken by the Broncos (they may try to trade up) do they reach for the next best tackle? Or do they address another position of need? The QB position is no longer set, as Jake Delhomme had a serious injury, and even before that, he was on shaky ground. They could also use another safety. Off the top, the battle would seem to be between taking Brian Brohm, or taking the next best offensive tackle Chris Williams, or even Jeff Otah. Brohm appears to be a 2nd round level player, while there are still 1st round OTs available. Angry that Denver stole their pick, the Panthers settle for OT Chris Williams...
Matt-With Carolina choosing to move Wharton inside to OG ,they have an immediate opening at LT. Williams has the ability to step in and immediately become that LT. He can both run block and pass block, and has the athletic ability to go against speed rushers. With Gross and Williams as the book ends, they have a dynamic duo.
14. Chicago-RB Rashad Mendenhall-Illinois
Matt-Chicago really lacks the offensive weapons to have a consistent passing attack, and while Grossman is inaccurate, his WR's haven't really helped him out. Kelly brings a nice blend of size and skill to this offense, and he could eventually develop into a #1 WR in this league. He's also a piece they can use to build their offense around.
Alex-Originally, it seemed like a given that Chicago would choose a WR after losing Bernard Berrian, but Cedric Benson has been a total bust for them. The Bears need to take pressure off of their QB Grossman, and need a RB to step up and fill the shoes that Benson was supposed to fill. With the draft being so deep on WRs, the Bears opt to fill their RB spot first, with a prospect that has a good blend of size, strength and speed, and choose RB Rashard Mendenhall.
Coin Flip determines that the pick is Rashard Mendenhall.
15. Detroit-OT Jeff Otah-Pittsburgh
Alex-The Lions have a strong need for a better Offensive tackle, as last year they allowed way too many sacks. Jeff Backus is just okay at Left Tackle. A RB would be useful, but they don't want to reach for one either. Their last top need might be a speedy, athletic middle linebacker to use in their Tampa 2 defensive scheme. Dan Connor has adequate speed, he is very athletic and a great tackler, eerily similar to Posluszny - he could be a consideration. Ultimately, the Lions decide on offensive tackle Jeff Otah to solidify that line, and bring the high number of sacks down.
Matt-I think that while Detroit has holes on the defensive side of the ball, and needs to replace Boss Bailey at LB, they must improve their pass protection. With Backus anchoring the left side, a young Sam Baker could step right in and dominate the right side. Baker has good feet and ideal technique. He could get a little stronger, but with time he should.
Coin Flip determines the pick to be Jeff Otah.
16. Arizona-CB Mike Jenkins-South Florida
Matt-Arizona is desperate to find some help for Antrell Rolle in their secondary, and though they were hoping to see Harvey fall here to replace the loss of Calvin Pace, they will settle for a player who some consider to be the top CB in this draft class. Jenkins is as consistent as they come, and can play both man to man or zone coverages.
Alex-Arizona has reached a desperation point in their secondary. Antrell Rolle has moved to Safety, and their current pegged starters will never be confused with a real shutdown corner. Arizona does not hesitate to take CB Mike Jenkins.
17. Minnesota-DE Phillip Merling-Clemson
Alex- Having spent a great deal on WR Bernard Berrian in the off season, and the relatively decent play of WR Bobby Wade at #2, the Vikings decide to look over on the defensive side. With two top DTs playing well for them, the Vikings decide to try and upgrade their DEs, who have been disappointing. Kenechi Udeze has underachieved mainly due to his sickness and battle with Leukemia. No Viking D-lineman has obtained more than 5.5 sacks in the last 2 years. For a cover 2 styled defense, where the front 4 defensive lineman are constantly attacking, this is unacceptable. Though Phillip Merling is recovering from a hernia operation, the Vikings will likely risk taking him here rather than taking a lower ranked DE that may never reach the potential that Merling has. Vikings choose DE Phillip Merling.
Matt-What once was thought of as a good tandem in Kenechi Udeze and Erasmus James has turned for the worst, and many fans in Minny are ready to move on. Ray Edwards provides a great pass rush off one edge, and Merling has the all around DE game to dominate the other end. While Minnesota may need some QB help, Tavaris Jackson is still young, and was pushed into the starting job far too early.
18. Houston-S Kenny Phillips-Miami
Matt-Houston has a good CB in Dunta Robinson, but it could use some help over the top. Phillips is a play making safety that some have said is in the mold of Ed Reed. He can hit, he can cove,r and he can make a play on the ball. Phillips shouldn't have dropped this far, but Houston loves that he did.
Alex-Houston still has a huge need on the Offensive line, but grabbing one here would be a reach. They are ecstatic to have the top Safety fall to them, as it is a position of need. Houston does not hesitate and immediately grabs Kenny Phillips.
19. Philadelphia-OT Sam Baker-USC
Alex-Despite having needs on the Offensive line, the Eagles' passing game deteriorated somewhat last year. Grabbing Asante Samuel gave them a huge boost in the secondary, allowing them to turn attention over to their offense. Given that Philly lives and dies by the passing game, they would be ludicrous to give up on obtaining Sweed or Kelly here. Both are tall receivers, with decent speed, who will be coveted players in fantasy football leagues for years to come. The question is, who do they pick between Sweed and Kelly? Because Kelly has not worked out, and has an injury that could potentially be more serious than the wrist injury his counterpart has, Philly likely ends up going with Sweed.
Matt-Philadelphia is old on the bookends, and I think it's about time to label Winston Justice a bust. Sam Baker makes perfect sense for this blue collar town. Philly badly wanted Phillips to slip to them, but will settle for the technically sound OT from So Cal.
Coin Flip determined the pick to be OT Sam Baker.
20. Tampa Bay-WR Malcolm Kelly-Oklahoma
Matt-With an aging Joey Galloway and Ike Hilliard as their top two WR targets, Tampa is counting its lucky stars that Kelly has fallen to them here. Kelly has a top vet QB in Jeff Garcia.
Alex-With Joey Galloway turning 37, and the rest of the WR corps being nothing to write home about, TB is in clear need of infusion of some young receiving talent on their roster. With the best WRs being Sweed and Kelly, the Buccaneers are able to go with either one. Malcolm Kelly is their final choice.
21. Washington-WR Limas Sweed-Texas
Alex- Washington has needs at defensive end, but given that most of the top ends are now taken, they turn to their next problem. Washington is in need of a big receiver to add to their roster. Before he is snapped up, the Redskins quickly pick WR Limas Sweed to help their current dwarf WR lineup of Moss and Randle-El.
Matt-Washington has, in the past, spent big money and high draft picks on WR's Randle-El, Taylor Jacobs, and Brandon Lloyd. However, all of those were either reaches or spending big bucks on guys who weren't worth it. This time, they get a guy who actually falls to them in Limas Sweed, and they don't mess this one up!
22. Dallas-CB Aqib Talib-Kansas
Matt-Jerry Jones is crushed that his hometown WR didn't fall to him in Sweed; however he can still grab one of the top play makers in the country, who is from his region, in CB Talib out of Kansas. Talib is a play maker at CB, who attacks the ball and goes for the big play. He also returns punts, and can play a little WR.
Alex-The Cowboys have 8 CBs on their roster, desperately trying to upgrade that position. One is a rookie and three are first year experienced candidates. With DRC gone, much to their dismay, as well as Jenkins, they turn toward the next best CB - Aqib Talib. Aqib is tall and fast, and will upgrade their secondary immediately.
23. Steelers-OT/OG Branden Albert-Virginia
Alex- with heavy losses to FA, Pittsburgh must turn their attention to their O line - especially now that they have invested heavily into Ben Roethlisburger. Skyrocketing up the charts, the Steelers choose a linemen who would be in the top 15 had he played Tackle in college. Fast, hard working and versatile, this blue collar town will love Branden Albert, who is 6'7" and can play both Guard and Tackle.
Matt-Big Ben is not the most swift footed QB, and losing OG Alan Faneca really will sting. Albert is by far the best OG in the draft, and his versatility makes him even more valuable. Albert is not only huge, but he is also strong as an ox, and will be able to anchor down again big meaty DT's.
24. Titans-WR DeSean Jackson-Cal
Matt-Vince Young needs people who can get open. DeSean Jackson can use his speed to stretch the field and get open. He is also a dangerous weapon after the catch, and provides the ability to line up in multiple formations. He is also the most dangerous punt returner in this class.
Alex-Vince Young has a way of getting the team a win, and is great at buying time to get receivers open. It would therefore behoove Tennessee to get him more weapons to work with. Though an intriguing prospect, after the Pacman fiasco, the Titans might be wary of grabbing WR James Hardy, who has had off the field issues. Instead, they decide to grab DeSean Jackson, who despite his slight weight, has 4.35 speed with a quick burst, punt return skills, and should be able to pack on more pounds on his frame without hurting his speed. He should also add an electrifying feeling to the return game - and given Devin Hester's success in the last 2 years to elevate and have special teams contribute, this is not something that should be ignored. Tennessee chooses WR DeSean Jackson.
25. Seattle-OT Gosder Cherilus-Boston College
Alex-The Seahawks have a need at TE, but there is no TE worthy to be picked here. DJ Hackett's eventual replacement can probably wait in this large pool of WR prospects. One thing Seattle has always focused on is having a very decent O line to work with. Despite having some youngsters on the team, nobody has stepped up. Seattle, therefore, decides to pick a very decent prospect in OT Gosder Cherilus. He showed well in the combine, and at 6' 6", 315 lbs, and with his long arms and great push as a run blocker to help open up holes for Shaun Alexander and Julius Jones...he may be a staple in their O line for years to come.
Matt-Seattle needs help on both lines, and while I think they will look long and hard at DT Kentwan Balmer and DT Pat Sims here, they in the end will hope to improve their OL by taking Cherilus, who is a hulking OT with a mean streak and isn't afraid to mix it up.
26. Jacksonville-LB Quentin Groves-Auburn
Matt-Jacksonville needs to improve its OLB badly, and Groves provides them with the ability to do that. He has the speed to be a 4-3 OLB, and he can get down in the 3 point stance on passing downs and rush the passer. Groves could end up as the steal of the draft going this late.
Alex-Jacksonville has filled many holes in its offensive sides at WR, RB and even behind the Center. They lack play makers on Safety, but there is no one here worthy to take. On the D line, what used to be a strength is now a weakness, both at the ends and in the middle, where they lost DT Stroud to Buffalo. Jacksonville decides to address this by grabbing DE/OLB Quentin Groves, who is fast, if a bit undersized. Groves was a great prospect last year, who underachieved in '07, and the Jaguars will hope that Quentin is able to get back on track. Jaguars choose DE/OLB Quentin Groves.
27. San Diego-LB Dan Connor-Penn State
Alex-With no real glaring holes, the Chargers are in the great position of choosing BPA and get good value in their pick. They will likely pick Michael Turner's successor later in the draft, and with the emergence of Vincent Jackson, can afford to wait for more WRs. Given the injuries and inability for Luis Castillo to stay healthy, the Chargers could look to DT Kentwan Balmer, and help add some stability and consistency to their defensive line that has little depth otherwise. Ultimately, the Chargers zone in and decide on Dan Connor (ILB) to solidify and upgrade the middle of that linebacking defense.
Matt-San Diego could use some help in the middle of their LB crew, and Connor makes perfect sense for a team which struggled in defending the rush last season. While Merriman and Cooper handle the pass rush duties, Dan Connor will be allowed to sit back in his zone and make plays as they develop.
28. Dallas-RB Jonathan Stewart-Oregon
Matt-Dallas lost Julius Jones in the off season to Seattle, and still needs a back to pair with Marion Barber III. Stewart had off season surgery, and that may have led to his slight drop in Round 1, but some argue he is the #2 back in the draft, and may be #1 with McFadden's propensity for off the field issues.
Alex-Every year, rumors seem to surface about Dallas trading up in the draft for a premier RB. Though Marion Barber has a propensity for getting into the end zone, it is unknown if he can handle the rigors of an entire season. The Cowboys never seemed to like Julius Jones too much, which is why they let him go, but look for them to replace him fairly quickly with insurance should Barber tire. The top 2 RBs may be gone already, but pre-surgery, Jonathan Stewart was being considered in the mix. The Cowboys would be crazy to let him slip through their fingers.
29. San Francisco-WR Early Doucet-LSU
Alex-So many holes to fill...but none bigger than at WR, where they need play makers for Alex Smith. Darrell Jackson was a bust, Ashley Lelie has done nothing...and at 35, Isaac Bruce is hardly their savior. They signed Bryant Johnson as a first step, but will need a lot more to be able to compete. With a desperate need, SF chooses Early Doucet, who is probably the most polished, and can jump in and start immediately. With Bryant Johnson, they don't lack size, and need someone who can quickly start in hopes that he can uplift their sagging current corps.
Matt-This pick will shock some, as many mock drafters have James Hardy as a virtual lock here. But Doucet may be the most polished WR coming out of college, and his sure hands are the most important thing that SF needs to see if Alex Smith is the QB of the future or a bust. They must figure that out before anything else.
30. Green Bay-CB Leodis McKelvin-Troy
Matt-One of the hardest players to mock this year has been the corner out of Troy. He had a great all-star game showing, knocking down passes left and right, but can he turn those deflections and batting of the ball into interceptions and turnovers? Either way, GB could use a solid cover corner opposite Charles Woodson, who is not as young as he once was.
Alex-GB could use secondary help. Though Safety is probably the more pressing issue, the value of their 1st pick would be better served grabbing the next best CB, which in this case is Leodis McKelvin. GB has been a surprise as of late, with offensive playmakers stepping up. Aaron Rodgers is set to take over now at QB, and about the best they can do, given that he already has weapons on the offense, is to improve the defense and get him the ball more often...GB chooses CB McKelvin.
31. New York Giants-S Reggie Smith-Oklahoma
Alex-The Giants can go any number of ways, mostly on defense with the loss of their WLB, S and the possible loss of Strahan. On the offensive side, a better LT would be preferred to help protect Eli also. Which gets them the most for the value? As the Giants have ever done, they will no doubt focus on their defense first. At LB, they may be expecting Zak DeOssie to develop and jump right in. Justin Tuck is expected to be Strahan's eventual replacement; however, at safety, they essentially have three on their roster, and one of those is on the wrong side of 30. The Giants appear to be more desperate at safety than any other, and end up choosing Reggie Smith.
Matt-While a patchwork secondary worked last year for the Giants, they cannot continue to count only on their pass rush to make defensive plays. They recognize that this year, and go with the versatile Reggie Smith to come in and play both center field for them and also come up to the line and cover a slot guy the whole way.
ROUND 2:
1. Miami - QB Brian Brohm-Louisville
Matt- I don't think Parcells is sold on Beck in any way, and Brohm is the most NFL ready QB in this draft class. Parcells can bring him in almost from Day 1 and watch him produce. This will bring some much needed stability to the Miami QB position.
Alex-Parcells has never been one to shy from controversy, and it is very like him to choose to bring in his own man rather than go with the previous administration's decisions.
2. St. Louis - WR James Hardy-Indiana
Alex-With Isaac Bruce gone, and their two top receivers approaching 30, the Rams need an infusion of young blood, and what better way to start than to grab a 6'7" behemoth!
Matt-The loss of Bruce is a huge blow to this team, and they must find a way to replace him. Holt is a true #1 WR in the NFL, and Hardy provides this team with the size they don't currently have.
3. Atlanta - QB Joe Flacco-Delaware
Matt-With Miami taking Brohm at the top of the round, Atlanta has to be concerned about their guy not being there, so instead of waiting another three picks, they nab the top DI-AA QB prospect here. Flacco has the arm to make Falcons fans forget about last year.
Alex-The Falcons elected to take a top LT in the first round, and now choose a raw QB with potential in Joe Flacco as insurance, should Redman not turn out to be what they need at QB. Flacco has great potential, and the capability to throw the ball 70+ yards.
4. Kansas City - OT Carl Nicks-Nebraska
Alex-Having had to dismiss addressing their O line in the first round, they come back to it in the second round and grab the next best offensive line prospect - OT Carl Nicks, who is a mammoth tackler at 341 pounds, with speed.
Matt-Nicks is that rare breed of freakish athlete. He's not your Vernon Davis type; instead, he's nearly 350 pounds, yet moves around as well as some guys 100 pounds lighter. He is a great fit for a KC offense that needs to protect their QB.
5. New York Jets- DE Calais Campbell-Miami
Matt-Campbell is a massive end, who has top 5 talent; however, he had a lack luster senior year, and must return to form. If he learns to use his size correctly, the Jets just got a steal.
Alex-Justin McCareins is gone, and Coles has been whining a lot lately, and could be traded or end up in the doghouse. WR Mario Manningham did not do well in the combine and timed a slow 40, but he plays much faster and is a vertical threat.
Coin Flip determines the pick to be DE Calais Campbell.
6. Atlanta - DT - Ketwan Balmer-North Carolina
Alex-Atlanta has filled two main holes at OT and QB. Now they need to turn their attention to their next gaping hole at DT. Ketwan Balmer is a promising DT that has room to get bigger, and is very strong. If he can get his head together, he will be an outstanding pick for them.
Matt-Balmer really showed a lot of promise this year when he got some talent around him. Not only is he lightning fast into the gap, he can get under the offensive lineman and gain leverage.
7. Baltimore - CB - Antoine Cason-Arizona
Matt-Cason is a good cover corner who can be physical at the line. He has good size and adequate speed for their defense, which should make him shine.
Alex-Baltimore has had injuries in their secondary, and also lack depth severely. Any of the top prospects available should help them bolster the position.
8. San Francisco - DE/OLB Cliff Avril-Purdue
Alex-Manny Lawson was a good pickup last year, but the defense still needs help on the other side, given that Tully Banta-Cain was a disappointment. They may be looking to move him to the middle next to Patrick Willis. With another pass rusher off the edge, SF could easily have the best LB corps - SF chooses DE/OLB Cliff Avril.
Matt-The beauty of this pick is that Avril can be that stand up rusher on the edge, or put a hand down and play the DE spot for SF. He's also a sound tackler, and a beast to block.
9. New Orleans - DT Pat Sims-Auburn
Matt-New Orleans has two great defensive ends, but really lacks a play maker in the middle to make their DL's one of the best in the NFL. Sims is a big body who is athletic and strong.
Alex-The Saints lost out on a top DT in the first round, but ensure themselves of the next available tackle in the second. Pat Sims is a tremendous athlete with great potential.
10. Buffalo - DT Trevor Laws-Notre Dame
Alex-Having gotten WR Devin Thomas in the first, the Bills turn their attention to the next gaping hole on their team - namely at TE. But are any of the TEs worth a pick at such a high position in the second round? The Bills need to add height to their arsenal, and there are any number of tall TEs that could be had in the third. John Carlson is probably the best candidate if they take a TE here. If they go to DE, another area Buffalo could stand to improve, there is Lawrence Jackson and Chris Ellis - both could have durability concerns, and Ellis may even have character issues. Jason Jones might be an interesting prospect in that he played out of position at DT previously, and may be better than anticipated at DE. But he's likely a project. At DT, Trevor Laws or Dre Moore could be considered. But at the top of the second round would be reaching for these two, who might end up being at best backups. The only reasonable pick appears to be the top TE. John Carlson runs good routes, is a good athlete, and a hard worker. He knows how to get open, and even though his combine numbers weren't great, it was later revealed that he had been sick with a stomach virus the week before, and was still recovering from that. He never mentioned it at the combine, apparently not wanting to use it as an excuse. He's a good blocker also, and intelligent, and these are all qualities that I think the Bills Front Office looks for in the people they bring onto the team. At just about 6' 5", he has the height, the long arms, and the all around game to upgrade the Bills TE position immediately. The Buffalo Bills select John Carlson.
Matt-Buffalo still needs help in the middle of the DL, and needs somebody to backup Stroud. Trevor Laws hovers right around 300+ pounds, and could add some weight. He is light on his feet, and can attack the line with a ferocity. He has good skill, and can either bull rush or shoot the gap. While it is a pick for depth given Stroud's injury history and Laws versatility, it's also an insurance policy.
Determined DT Trevor Laws to be the pick
11. Denver - S Thomas DeCoud-Cal
Alex-With young guys such as Jarvis Moss and Tim Crowder looking to step up opposite Dumervil at DE, Denver decides to address their weak Safety position. Lynch is getting olde,r and opposite him is a weakness regardless. Denver chooses Safety Thomas DeCoud.
12. Carolina - RB Jamaal Charles-Texas
Matt-With the release of DeShaun Foster, the Panthers must replace him in their two back system, and the power of Charles is a great way to compliment the speed of Williams.
Alex-With Deangelo Williams as the only running back on their roster with starting capability, Carolina decides to invest in a RB to compliment and help take the load off of him. Carolina chooses Jamaal Charles.
13. Chicago - WR Mario Manningham-Michigan
Alex-After filling the gaping RB position in the first round, the Bears are ecstatic to fill their WR opening with a prospect whose value fell due to a poor combine showing, but who plays much better on the field than those results show. The Bears choose WR Mario Manningham.
Matt-While Mario had a rough combine, the kid can play, and his game film shows that. He'll be a great addition for Rex Grossman to work with.
14. Detroit - ILB Jerod Mayo-Tennessee
Matt-Detroit needs help in the middle of their defense, and while Lemon filled in adequately, they need a play maker. Mayo has the speed the play side line to side line and can hit like a Mack truck.
Alex-The Lions can consider either LB or RB at this point. Considering Tatum Bell is their starter, and last year couldn't even beat out Kevin Jones, who got less than 600 yards during the season, the Lions may decide on someone like Felix Jones. But ultimately, they will likely pick a MLB to upgrade the position in their Tampa 2 style. Lions select Jerod Mayo.
15. Cincinnati - DT Red Bryant-Texas A&M
Alex-The Bengals still have a gaping hole at DT that they could not fill in the first round. As such, they take the best available target for their ailing defense. The Bengals select massive DT Red Bryant.
Matt-Cincinnati has a horrible defense, and after adding Harvey in Round One, they get to add the big tackle next to him. They know that the game is won in the trenches, and that's where they'll build.
16. Minnesota - QB Chad Henne-Michigan
Matt-The Vikings are very lucky that Henne falls to them here; with Brohm and Flacco off the board so quickly, they had the be afraid Henne would be gone, too. Jackson will have to step up this year to hold off Henne.
Alex-With Kelly Holcomb playing backup and contemplating retirement, Minnesota can ill afford for Tavaris Jackson to have an injury or, worse, regress from the slight improvements he's shown. The Vikings decide to take a promising QB who may even challenge Jackson down the road.
17. Atlanta - CB Patrick Lee-Auburn
Alex-With the departure of DeAngelo Hall to the Raiders, Atlanta has become somewhat thin at CB, with only 5 CBs on their roster. Atlanta chooses a fast, natural athlete with good potential. Falcons choose CB Patrick Lee.
Matt-Lee has come on strong recently, and really jumped a bunch of other prospects who many thought were well established. Combined with last year's second round pick Chris Houston could develop into a dynamic duo.
18. Philadelphia - WR Andre Caldwell-Florida
Matt-Philadelphia is looking to add a few more options to their offense, and Caldwell is one of the most explosive prospects remaining. He has good size and speed, and is a very underrated pass catcher.
Alex-With a new LT in Round One, the Eagles are due for an upgrade at WR, and Andre Caldwell will fit in perfectly in Philadelphia.
19. Arizona-RB Felix Jones-Arkansas
Alex-Edgerrin James has been a huge disappointment for the Cardinals, and is now getting older. The Cardinals need a huge upgrade, and get one in RB Felix Jones.
Matt-Arizona got their big OL last year in Levi Jones, and Edge still couldn't consistently move the chains. It's time for a new back, and Jones is their man.
20. Washington - DE Lawrence Jackson-USC
Matt-Washington has the aging Phillip Daniels at defensive end, and could use an injection of youth. Jackson is the perfect all around DE for their scheme, and a compliment to Andre Carter.
Alex-Washington grabbed their receiver in the first round. Now it's time for them to grab a DE, and try to regain that tough defense they used to have.
21. Tampa Bay - DT DeMario Pressley-NC State
Alex-Tampa has a couple of aging DTs, one of which is a restricted FA and may be gone next year. It's time to start molding possible new replacements. DeMario Pressley is a prototypical 3-technique defensive tackle that underachieved his senior year, but who can be a promising prospect.
Matt-Tampa is so desperate for DT help, they signed KC bust draft pick Ryan Sims last season. Pressley can come in and make an immediate impact for Tampa from Day 1.
22. Pittsburgh - LB Curtis Lofton-Oklahoma
Matt-While Pittsburgh needs help both at LB and CB, they go LB here, and get the sure tackling Curtis Lofton. With Farrior aging and Foote not establishing himself this pick makes too much sense.
Alex-With the drafting of Lawrence Timmons last year to help on the outside, it's time they boosted the inside of their internal LB corps. Steelers select Curtis Lofton, a productive LB who will fit right in and strengthen that defense.
23. Tennessee - DE Chris Ellis-Virginia Tech
Alex-The Titans had 2 DEs leave this offseason, and were so desperate, they even took in Jevon Kearse, who is barely a shadow of his former self. They need a new infusion of talent here, and choose DE Chris Ellis.
Matt-Both Odom and Laboy left in the off season, and while they picked up Kearse, he is nowhere near what he used to be. Ellis is a young high energy pass rusher who can provide some much needed energy to a struggling defense.
24. Seattle - TE Fred Davis-USC
Matt-Seattle is desperate for a TE with some playmaking ability. Davis can be a playmaker, just don't expect much in the blocking department.
Alex-With Marcus Pollard aging, Seattle needs a new playmaker at the TE position that can catch and expand that offense for Hasselback. With a great O line, they can afford to pick a TE who will be used for catching more than blocking...Seahawks choose TE Fred Davis.
25. GB - S DaJuan Morgan-NC State
Alex-GB has not had good luck in obtaining quality Safeties over the past couple of years. They decide to try again, and grab a promising safety with a lot of upside to play alongside Nick Collins, and finally solidify the entire secondary. They also get a stud special teamer in S DeJuan Morgan.
Matt-Atari Bigby wasn't a huge disappointment last year for the Packers, but he's also not the answer, either. Morgan provides stability to a position that hasn't had it in quite a few years for the Pack.
26. Miami - OT Anthony Collins-Kansas
Matt-Collins is a big OT who can be a mainstay on Miami's line for years. He'll come in an immediately replace the released LJ Shelton.
Alex-With the horrendous O line Miami has had over the last few years, they definitely need to work on upgrading it. Having gotten OG Justin Smiley from SF, and needing to move Vernon Carey from left to RT, Miami needs a new LT, and decides on the Kansas prospect OT Anthony Collins, who is versatile and athletic, and can man the left hand side.
27. JAX - S Tyrell Johnson-Arkansas State
Alex-Continuing to upgrade their defense to return to what they used to be, the Jaguars select a Safety to go right alongside their last year pick Reggie Nelson, to solidify that secondary. Sammy Knight filled the gap temporarily, but was never the plan for the future. They also gain a special teams ace in S Tyrell Johnson.
Matt-Jacksonville needs safety help to accompany Reggie Nelson in their defensive backfield. Josh Barrett has been an unheralded player so far, but at 6'2, 223, running a 4.34 40, that won't last long.
Coin Flip Determined the pick to be S Tyrell Johnson
28.-OG Chilo Rachal-USC
Alex-With the loss of Jake Scott to FA, Indy needs new protection for Peyton on the inside. How better than to obtain the top notch Guard that can help in both the run and passing game? Indy chooses OG Chilo Rachal.
Matt-They still have to protect Peyton Manning, and Rachal has been protecting John David Booty for two years now. He also has blocked for a multitude of different backs and different styles, so he is capable in the running game.
29. Green Bay-OLB Erin Henderson-Maryland
Matt-Adding the young and energetic Henderson to the LB crew of Hawk and Barnett could make this trio among the best in the league. Henderson is fast and hits hard, he's a little sloppy, but very solid.
Alex-Obtaining OLB Erin Henderson here is fantastic, as GB is able to address their secondary and LB corps, creating a more solid defense, and not having to rely on newbie QB Aaron Rodgers as much.
30. Dallas-WR Lavelle Hawkins-Cal
Alex-With Terry Glenn aging and slowing down, and TO still producing, but turning 35 this year, Dallas will need to ensure that they get a decent WR prospect that may take over. Lavelle Hawkins is quick and agile, and should do well for the Cowboys.
Matt-With Glenn and TO getting older, the Cowboys need to find a replacement for one or both. Patrick Crayton emerged last year, and Hawkins should be able to sit back and learn before being counted on for big production.
31. New England-LB Xavier Adibi-Virginia Tech
Matt-Adibi can replace some of their aging LB, and be an excellent addition as a rush OLB. He has blazing speed and good vision.
Alex-NE's aging LBs corps needs serious retooling. They cannot rely on Ted Bruschi lasting forever, and have to begin recruiting the next generation. Xavier Adibi fits in nicely with his speed and technique.
32. New York Giants-LB Tavares Gooden-Miami
Alex-With the loss of Kawika Mitchell to the Bills, as well as the loss of Reggie Torbor, the Giants hope Zak DeOssie steps up, and will still need one other to fill the loss. Tavares Gooden is athletic and powerful. He's fast (even ran track at one point), and has experience playing all three LB positions as well as special teams.
Matt-Gooden is a very fast LB, who could be a terror on the outside for the Giants. He can contribute immediately on special teams.
ROUND 3:
1. Miami-CB Tracy Porter-Indiana
Alex-Miami has been found lacking in quality CBs for the last few years. At last, they grab a CB that is decent in Tracy Porter, who is a playmaker with great speed and talent.
Matt-Porter is an unheralded play maker out of the Big 10, who has the speed to run with any WR in the league. He should be piece to insert into Miami's lineup.
2. St. Louis-WR Donnie Avery-Houston
Alex-After letting WR Isaac Bruce go, the Rams grab a WR, and are ecstatic to be able to grab the speedy Donnie Avery, who some analysts were even given a first grade ranking to.
Matt-Avery provides speed to a receiving corps which badly needs it. While they did take Hardy in Round 2, Avery provides a deep speed threat out of the slot which could make a complete WR corps.
3. Kansas City-DT Frank Okam-Texas
Matt-Ron Edwards is one of their starting DT's. Okam is a big body DT, who can compliment Boone and take up blockers, which will allow Hali and Allen to go 1 on 1 on the outside.
Alex-KC addresses one of their weaknesses by grabbing a massive DT to replace Ron Edwards and man the middle. His hulking presence should upgrade that D line easily.
4. Carolina-QB Andre Woodson-Kentucky
Alex-With Jake Delhomme coming off a serious injury, Carolina needs to think about a QB here. Andre Woodson was initially categorized as a first rounder, but has since dropped. Still, he certainly has the potential to become a great QB if he refines his skills, and Carolina needs to be grooming someone sooner rather than later.
Matt-Woodson has excellent decision making skills when he is focused on the game. If Carolina can find a way to harness his skill and make him focus, he could be a steal here.
5. Atlanta-SS Josh Barrett-Arizona State
Matt-Atlanta needs to fix their safety problem, and Barrett is a guy with speed, size, and can hit. He was a little inconsistent in college, but he has a high ceiling of potential.
Alex-Atlanta continues to improve their defense by now getting a safety with potential, who can improve that duo alongside their surprise, Chris Harris, who has turned out okay.
6. New England-RB Chris Johnson-East Carolina
Alex-The Patriots have grabbed prospects at both the CB and OLB - their weakest positions. From here on out, they can easily go best player available. The Patriots only have 2 RBs on their roster currently and as a change of pace back, they would love to get their hands on a speedster like RB Chris Johnson. Chris Johnson is also a great receiver that could be another weapon for Tom Brady to throw to.
Matt-As much as this pick pains the rest of the AFC East ,it makes a ton of sense for NE. Johnson is a play maker who can take it to the house every time he touches the ball.
7. San Francisco-CB Terrell Thomas-USC
Matt-With Nate Clements on one side, Walt Harris is not the answer on the other. So far, Shawntae Spencer has not panned out, and Terrell Thomas has the size to be a good CB in this league.
Alex-The 49ers lost OG Justin Smiley to FA and Larry Allen is contemplating retirement. They need a new Guard badly to protect Alex Smith's return from injury and should be able to get a good one at this point of the draft. SF decides to get perhaps the 3rd best guard in OG Roy Schuening.
Coin Flip determined the pick to be CB Terrell Thomas
8. Jacksonville-DT Dre Moore-Maryland
Alex-with the loss of Marcus Stroud to Buffalo, the Jaguars use the traded pick to get a young defensive tackle to mold and eventually take the place of Stroud. Dre Moore is a large framed prospect with good speed who could develop into a great prospect, if he can put it all together.
Matt-They gotta replace Stroud, and Moore is the best DT left on the board. He is quick off the ball, and can really cut through a seam when needed.
9. Buffalo-TE Martellus Bennett-Texas A&M
Matt-Bennett has the most potential of an TE in this class; he can catch the ball, he can stretch the defenses ,and he can get the YAC. He has a huge frame, and with some added weight ,he can become a valuable blocker in the protection game. Bennett could be a #1 TE in this league.
Alex-Buffalo has languished in the red zone for years now, with small receivers and no viable TE to throw to. Martellus Bennett has great potential ,and is also a good blocker. He has the frame to get bigger if he wants, and has decent speed with good ball skills.
10. Minnesota-DT Andre Fluellen-Florida State
Alex-With the loss of Spencer Johnson to Buffalo, and the aging DTs upfront, Minnesota needs to think about investing in a DT that they can mold to possibly spell Pat Williams and eventually take over. They settle for Andre Fluellen - an excellent penetrator who should excel in the Tampa 2 system they have there.
Matt-Fluellen perfectly fits what Minnesota likes to do. He is a quick penetrating DT, who hits gaps and blows up plays. He will need to add some weight though.
11. Carolina-WR Jordy Nelson-Kansas State
Matt-Carolina has to get Steve Smith some serious help, and Dwayne Jarrett has been slow to step up. Nelson set the college ranks on fire last year with his output and skills.
Alex-Carolina turns their attention to a receiver that may not be super fast, but that gets results. Playing alongside Steve Smith, the tall Jordy Nelson should be a more than adequate #2 WR for them.
12. Chicago-OG Roy Schuening-Oregon State
Alex-Ruben Brown is in his mid 30s now, and it's time the Bears addressed the inside of the line, and got a younger prospect to protect for Rex. OG Roy Schuening should more than adequately fill up that space.
Matt-Chicago has an aging Reuben Brown ,who is a shell of his former self. Picking up Schuening is a step in the right direction for this team.
13. Detroit-CB Justin King-Penn State
Matt-Detroit has major holes in their secondary, and Charles Godfrey is a corner with size and skill. He can replace Bryant without an issue.
Alex-Detroit surprised many last year, and looks to continue to improve. Adding a promising CB to their secondary may give them a boost in an area that could use some improvement, and they got their man in Justin King.
Coin Flip determined Justin King to be the pick.
14. Cincinnati - ILB Jonathan Goff
Alex-The Bengals need to add to their LB corps and upgrade. Jonathan Goff is a good, intelligent athlete that should be able to help them out immediately in the inside.
Matt-With the suspension of Odell Thurman, MLB is a position that the Bengals must address. Goff is a player who can read and react with the best of them, and make tackles.
15. NO - TE John Carlson
Matt-Drew Brees could really use an outlet in the passing game, and while Carlson underachieved last year, he provides both the catching and blocking ability to make a difference.
Alex-The Saints best TE on their roster is inconsistent Eric Johnson. They need to have a better weapon for Drew Brees to have, and hopefully bounce back this season.
16. Houston - OT Oniel Cousins
Alex-Houston has forever had problems on their O line. Their current LT has only played all 16 games four times in his 10 yr career. At age 31, you have to believe that the odds are against him starting the entire season without injuries. OT Oniel Cousins is a sleeper prospect who is athletic and quick, and has made great strides as of late. He's still a work in progress, but he may perhaps be ready by the time their starter Ephraim Salaam gets injured yet again.
Matt-Houston needs a LT who can actually make it through a whole year, and with Eric Winston entrenched on the right side, Cousins could solidify the bookends of their line for the first time in franchise history.
17. Philly - OLB Ezra Butler
Matt-As of this moment undrafted second year LB Akeem Jordan is scheduled to be starting opposite Chris Gocong for Philly. Butler adds an athletic playmaker whose motor never stops running.
Alex-The Eagles need to upgrade at the LB position. Last year they took a chance in Takeo Spikes from Buffalo, but Takeo post injury is just not the same.
18. Arizona - DE Jason Jones
Alex-The Cardinals could use an upgrade over DE Antonio Smith. DE Jason Jones is a big guy, with good speed for his size, and he did not have the senior season exposure due to playing out of position at DT. Jones should be a good fit in Arizona's 3-4 defense.
Matt-A very underrated DE prospect, Jones was the force of the Eastern Michigan defense this past year. Jones has the size to play up or down in Arizona's 3-4.
19. Minnesota - S Jamar Adams
Matt-The Vikings need to find a replacement for Darren Sharper and Greg Blue isn't it. Adams was once thought of as the top SS prospect in this class.
Alex-The Vikings need to start grooming safety Darren Sharper's replacement. Jamar Adams has the potential to be great. At the very least, he is a well rounded player that should perform satisfactorily.
20. TB - CB Tyvon Branch
Alex-TB has been trying to retool their defense since their superbowl win. CB is a position they have yet to address. Perfect for their Tampa 2 defensive style is CB Tyvon Branch, who excels at zone coverage more than anything else, and at almost 6 feet with a 4.31 40, will be a threat to return a few interceptions.
Matt-While higher rated CB's are still on the board, Tampa goes with the guy who best fits their style of defense. Branch can run with any WR in the league and has solid size.
21. Washington - OG Eric Young
Matt-Young has the versatility to play inside or out, which will be a big help to Washington's line, with it having no starter under 30.
Alex-With both their left and right guard in the low to mid 30s, Washington needs a quick upgrade. Eric Young is a top 5 guard prospect.
22. Tennessee - CB Charles Godfrey
Alex-Having lost Pacman Jones, the Titans would love to find another stud CB to groom and take his place. Charles Godfrey has excellent measurables, and could turn out to be a decent catch.
23. Seattle - LB Beau Bell
Matt-Bell is an absolute animal on the field. He flies to the ball, and may be the most underrated hardest hitter in the draft. He has the versatility to play outside.
Alex-The Seahawks could use an aggressive play maker on the other side of Julian Peterson. Enter James Beaumont Bell, who is very aggressive, and could surprise some with his play.
24. Detroit - RB Kevin Smith
Alex-With only 3 RBs on the roster and Brian Calhoun recovering from injury, Detroit chooses a RB that is tough and gets the hard yards - taking some pressure off of Calhoun, and giving him less wear and tear.
Matt-Kevin Smith is a bruising runner who knows only two things: the direction to run is north and south, and to not ever go down. His legs never stop, and if you expect to take him down 1 on 1, you are going to be lying on your back watching him trample over you.
25. Pittsburgh - OT Duane Brown
Matt-Brown is an athletic OT who can further help protect Big Ben. He has quick enough feet and enough strength to play LT or RT in the NFL.
Alex-Continuing to work on their OL, the Steelers grab a nice developmental prospect in Brown, who has played multiple positions, and is athletic and light on his feet.
26. Jacksonville - OG Drew Radovich
Alex-After going 3 straight on the defensive side, the Jaguars turn to their offense and decide to pick up a Guard from the still remaining decent prospects out there. Drew Radovich is on most people's top 5 guards list, and should help make holes for Fred Taylor and Maurice Drew-Jones sooner rather than later.
Matt-Radovich is a very intelligent player, who has played inside and out. He has a real nasty streak that should bring something new to the Jacksonville line.
27. Chicago - Erik Ainge
Matt-Ainge is a big QB with a great football mind. He was a leader of the UT offense this past year, and the speed of his release was amongst the best in this class. Just one question though; Is he tough enough?
Alex-With Rex Grossman being so inconsistent, the Bears have almost no choice but to grab another prospect, in case they have to turn to him after this year. Ainge has the skills and the competitive spirit, if not necessarily the durability.
28. GB - WR/TE Adarius Bowman
Alex-Bowman had a terrible combine and pro day. His 40 speed was horrendous for a WR, but nevertheless, this is an athlete who blocks well and will go after the ball. He'll play better than his times, and GB can use him as a TE to spell Donald Lee without having to worry about losing something. Aaron Rodgers will love the coverage difficulties for him as a TE.
Matt-Bowman is thought by many to go much lower here, but his ability to spell Donald Lee, who GB likes to split out wide, is very intriguing for the match up issues he creates.
29. Dallas - OLB/DE Bruce Davis
Matt-Dallas needs to find a replacement for Greg Ellis, and why not another former DE like Bruce Davis? Davis has great speed off the edge, and should continue to show his nose for the QB.
Alex-OLB/DE Greg Ellis is getting on with age, and signing Zach Thomas to their LB corps is just temporary. Signing Bruce Davis gives them time to develop him and he will likely excel in a 3-4 defense.
30. Indy - DE/OLB Marcus Howard
Alex-Though he is a bit of a tweener between DE and OLB, Howard's experience mostly came in his senior year in which he turned it on - which may mean he can still develop further. With his speed and athleticism, Howard could develop well for the Colts.
Matt-The guy who got everyone talking at this year's combine goes to a team who is no stranger to taking smaller DE's. Howard can use his speed and learn from Freeney, and hopefully develop into a dangerous pass rusher.
31. NE - CB - Brandon Flowers
Matt-New England has a few holes to fill ,and adding another good CB to this team would be a good idea. Flowers is a smaller CB, but with decent leaping ability and an nose for the ball.
Alex-NE lost 2 CBs this offseason, and it is time they stop having this as their biggest position of weakness. In Flowers, they get a guy who has superb man to man and coverage skills. Some analysts even have Flowers rated as a 1st rounder. Flowers should do well for NE.
32. NYGiants - DT Carlton Powell
Matt-Powell fits in with the Giants' defensive scheme because he doesn't quit til after he hears the whistle. He'll enjoy the Giants' attacking defensive scheme and replace Fred Robbins.
Alex-With DT Fred Robbins over 30, it might be a good idea to grab an all around decent developmental prospect like Powell. At the very least, they'll be able to get rid of losers like Manny Wright, who wasn't even good enough to make it on a crappy Dolphin team.
33. Washington - DT Ahtyba Rubin (comp)
Matt-A big bodied DT for the middle of their line will help Washington's defense against the run. Rubin is strong at the point of attack, and holds his ground well.
Alex-A massive strong DT that is perfect as a nose tackle in a 3-4. Rubin should be a good pickup for Washington, whose defense was once considered outstanding, but has been lagging as of late.
34. Cincinnati - S Quintin Demps (comp)
Matt-A former top prospect who really struggled this past year. When he is on he is a playmaker in CF and can direct a defense very well.
Alex-An all around prospects who didn't excel at everything, but was a solid roundabout player. Good instincts and reasonable speed.
Coin Flip determined Quintin Demps to be the Pick
35. Atlanta - TE Dustin Keller (comp)
Matt-Atlanta released Alge Crumpler in the offseason, and Keller goes a long way to replacing him. He'll be a very welcome addition.
Alex-Keller will replace Crumpler easily, and upgrade their position. Keller has decent speed, and offers another target/weapon for Redman or a future franchise QB to throw to.
36. Baltimore - WR Earl Bennett (comp)
Matt-Baltimore could use a WR with some size, and Arrington really emerged last year when Manningham struggled.
Alex-A good prototypical possession receiver that will give Baltimore another weapon among its current WRs. Earl Bennett is not going to light it up, but should be able to produce adequately as a #2 WR.
Coin Flip determined Earl Bennett to be the Pick.
