Winners and Losers: Week 13

by Bruce McMichael

Tennessee 47 / Detroit 10
Winner: LenDale White (TEN) opened his mouth about his carries a week ago, and Jeff Fisher responded. LenDale got 23 carries for 106 yards and two scores. Using two backs is key to the success of the Titans.
Loser: Shaun McDonald (DET) set the pace for Detroit’s latest suck-fest. On the very first play of the game, McDonald fumbled and Tennessee scored two plays later. The Titans didn’t take their foot off the neck of the Lions until 4 minutes remained in the 4th.

Dallas 34 / Seattle 9
Winner: Jason Witten (DAL) made play after play for the Cowboys on Monday. Witten grabbed nine balls for 115 yards and a score.
Loser: Us. Both Thanksgiving Day games were blow outs and provided zero entertainment.

Philadelphia 48 / Arizona 20
Winner: Donovan McNabb (PHI) responded to being benched. The vet may or may not be on his way out of Philly, but he showed there is still gas in the tank. McNabb threw four TD’s and 260 yards.
Loser: It’s hard to blame Kurt Warner (ARI), whose team faced a 21 point deficit in the 2nd quarter. The MVP candidate threw three picks and never rallied his team past 20 points.

Indianapolis 10 / Cleveland 6
Winner: Robert Mathis (IND). In a game where only 16 points were scored, someone on defense was doing their job. Mathis sacked Derek Anderson twice and recovered a fumble.
Loser: Is anyone else really sick of Braylon Edwards (CLE)? The guy is an extreme talent, but he couldn’t be further from a clutch receiver.

Baltimore 34 / Cincinnati 3
Winner: Mark Clayton (BAL) had his best day as a pro, as people are starting to believe these Ravens are for real. Clayton had five catches for 164 yards and a TD. In the third quarter, Clayton tossed a 32 yarder to fellow receiver Derrick Mason for a score as well.
Loser: Marvin Lewis. Your team is 1-10-1, and you have the ball on the three yard line with time running out in the half. Instead of going for it and trying to spark this club, you take the three. The Bengals curled up in the fetal position once Palmer was done.

Miami 16 / St. Louis 12
Winner: Dan Carpenter (MIA) was Miami’s leading scorer with three FG’s.
Loser: Marc Bulger (STL) finished the game with a QB rating of 22.2, and threw three interceptions. Whoever takes over the Rams next season has a tough decision to make with the former all-pro.

San Francisco 10 / Buffalo 3
Winner: Isaac Bruce (SF) showed flashes of his former self Sunday. Bruce ran perfect routes, and cut through Buffalo’s defense at the exact time they needed him to. Bruce had five catches for 67 yards and a score.
Loser: Rian Lindell (BUF) has a reputation of being a consistent kicker, and that didn’t change on Sunday, when he consistently missed chip shots. Lindell missed a 20 and 40 yard kick, as the Bills fall out of the playoff hunt.

Carolina 35 / Green Bay 31
Winner: DeAngelo Williams (CAR) did his best Michael Turner impression this week. Williams had 21 carries for 72 yards and 4 touchdowns. The third year back is having a breakout year, in all rushing categories.
Loser: Ryan Grant (GB) has found himself it hot water. The second year back only has three TD’s on the season, and in 12 games this year, he has only broken 100 yards twice. Sunday, Grant was replaced by Brandon Jackson, who ran with much more success.

Tampa Bay 23 / New Orleans 20
Winner: I love Warrick Dunn (TB). Eleven years into his career and he plays with just as much passion as he did in 1997. Dunn had 22 carries for 74 yards against the Saints.
Loser: Deuce McAllister (NO), Charles Grant (NO), and Will Smith (NO) will all spend the final 4 weeks watching the Saints on tv. The NFL issued a four game suspension to all three Saints for the use of a steroid masking agent.

NY Giants 23 / Washington 7
Winner: Let’s give it up for Amani Toomer (NYG). In the height of all the Plaxico business, “Ole Faithful” Toomer hooked up with Eli early for a 40 yard score. During the final weeks, the Giants are going to need more games like this from their veteran receiver.
Loser: Any Guesses? Chances are if you shoot yourself in the leg with a concealed weapon tucked into your sweatpants… you’re a loser.

Atlanta 22 / San Diego 16
Winner: Matt Ryan (ATL) has a QB Rating of 91.2 on the season. He is clearly the leading next generation of NFL stars. He threw for 207 yards, two scores, and he’s well on his way to rookie of the year.
Loser: LaDainian Tomlinson (SD) is forcing too much pressure onto Philip Rivers. LT only averaged 1.4 yards a carry against Atlanta.

Pittsburgh 33 / New England 10
Winner: James Harrison (PIT) blindsided the hell out of the Patriots. Harrison singlehandedly turned the game in Pittsburgh’s favor. On Sunday, #92 had seven tackles and sacked Cassel twice, jarring the ball loose both times.
Loser: Matt Light (NE) got manhandled. I don’t know if he’s getting older, or just had an off day, but it seems Light struggles against big strong guys like Harrison.

Denver 34 / New York Jets 17
Winner: Jay Cutler (DEN) did exactly what he needed to against a tough Jets D. Cutler rattled off 27-43 for 357 yards and 2 TD’s. Denver looks to be a lock to win the division.
Loser: I hate Brett Favre (NYJ). I have never seen a QB just fling the ball around and get as lucky as he does. Not only does he have a horseshoe up his butt, I’d be willing to bet there is a unicorn and leprechaun in there as well.

Kansas City 20 / Oakland 13
Winner: Who cares?
Loser: Anyone?

Minnesota 34 / Chicago 14
Winner: Adrian Peterson (MIN) had 28 carries for 131 yards. He also broke one long for 59 yards and a score.
Loser: Kyle Orton (CHI) was intercepted three times in the second half. And only completed 37% of his passes on the day. The good news: he completed 100% of his passes to the Vikings.

ouston 30 / Jacksonville 17
Winner: Steve Slaton (HOU) showed up big for Houston again. Slayton was the big offensive contributor, with 21 carries and 130 yards and two touchdowns. Slayton struck both times in the 4th quarter and buried the Jags.
Loser: Khalif Barnes (JAX) allowed a big sack that caused a fumble and a seven yard score. That was the end for Jacksonville, as they continue to look up from the bottom of their division.
