View Full Version : Less chance of an OT sliding?

The Jaguars have just signed Torry Holt.

In my opinion this makes the chance of one of the Top4 OT sliding out of the Top10 less likely.

This is because the two needs of the Jaguars are now OT and DT. Even if Raji falls to the Jaguars and they nab him, a player that the Packers might go after will be a LT, as Chad Clifton is coming into a contract year and they need to upgrade here.

Teams that have LT needs in the Top10 are:

St Louis (to replace Orlando Pace)
Seahawks (to eventually replace Walter Jones)
Bengals (to pair opposite Levi Jones)
Jaguars (though they signed Tra Thomas, he's 35)
Packers (to replace Chad Clifton)
San Francisco (to replace Staley who moves back to RT)

Even considering potential Top10 picks like Sanchez, Raji, Crabtree, and Orakpo, there is a strong chance that we will be looking at Maybin or Brown as offering the best value with the 11th pick.

What might be of interest though is if both the Redskins and Broncos want Sanchez and if he is still there, that both might 'overpay' to move up a place and beat the other.

It would excellent if the front office can persuade the Broncos to move up one place and still give us something.

Some people dont consider Oher a Top 12 pick, or even Top 20 for that matter.

Personally, I think Oher will be on the board at #11-- its a question of how much the Bills value him.

and if there is a run on T and the top 4 are gone don't expect any other 1st rd T talent to be there @28. The Bill swill have to reach at #28 becuase there will be a run on T's and when our 2nd rd pick comes up there is a good chance that the T's left to choose from there will be late 2nd rd 3rd rd talents.

I know we need interior OL but we are evne more desperate to replace Peters IMO. No argument I have read convinces me we that the T's we have our good enough to forget replcing Peters with a player who can quite posisbly win a starting T job on day 1.

I am gonna stand by my belief that the Bills wouldn't have traded Peters if they didn't feel they could get a top tackle in this draft. While I do see three tackles going in the top 10. I don't see all four. I do see one of them slipping. Now depending on who teams like its either going to be Oher or A. Smith.

The Jags had no receivers before getting Holt and they need a young receiver for him to groom. Maclin would be perfect.

Remember, they lost/released Matt Jones, Reggie Williams and Jerry Porter. They seriously have no one.

Does it concern anyone that we are talking about possibly Smith being there andi taking him, I mean we just got rid of one lazy LT who thinks he's so great and we could possibly be taking another that was too good to get ready for the combine and has been out of shape in his offseason to show he deserves millions of dollars??

It definitley makes me wonder about him a bit.

I share that fear too... which is why I am more on the Oher train.

and its not just the Peters issue that has me fearing A. Smith it's the Mike Williams debacle as well.

Except for the fact they are high on Mike Walker and a certain Troy Williamson, of stone hands, caught 84 balls for 1,047yds last season.

I think they will look at WR in the 2nd round and hope that Percy Harvin or Hakeem Nicks are still on the board

I am really not worried about A. Smith too much. I watched him play and the kid was so dominant. I mean he is an outstanding run-blocker and a very solid pass blocker. I really don't think there is so much concern about him as a player. I think the biggest concern is his work ethic. You know he has the talent. Its just keeping him motivated. Is he a risk sure. I really think that he isn't Mike Williams though. Mike Williams was a softee. He was just too nice of a guy and you can't have that mentality on the football field as a lineman.

Mike Walker had 16 rec last year and Williamson had 5. Dont think they are too high on Williamson. Walker is still a project. They need more receivers and they need a go to guy other than Holt.

Good point on Mike Williams. We just can't win at that position, we thought Peters would. Be the LT Williams wasn't a d be turned out to. Be a douche. Figures.

My concern is also about Oher who is not the sharpest tool in the box. For example their wonderlic scores:

Andre Smith 17
Michael Oher 19
Eben Britton 31

The average for an OT is 26.

A.Smith lost weight between the college season and the combine. He was in better shape. The fact that he was flabby is a non-issue. All OL are flabby. The kid is a football player. Top 5 in the country.

What would we do with Harvin? He is more of a reggie bush type of player and probably couldn't be a starting WR full time. He would be a good returner but we are currently shopping a very similar player in Roscoe so I don't see any way we could take Harvin, we don't have the luxury of being able to take anyone with that pick.

Apologies my mistake - misread NFL.com

Anyway, outside of Crabtree, I still think they are more likely to go after Hakeem Nicks, Percy Harvin or Darius Heyward-Bey if they are there in Round2 as I think only Al Davis would ever draft Maclin in the Top10

Awesome way to put things in perspective. The only guy who really has to be smart on the line is your center. He is the guy who does the line calls. Look kernboy just has agenda just like I do. My agenda is promote OT for the 11th overall selection. His is some defensive pick. Doesn't matter what as long as it somehow contributes to making our defense tops in the league when our offense is a bottom dweller.

Peters forced the Bills hand, and they did what they had to do.

Kid Mickey I don't have an agenda. I definitely do not want to pick a defensive player for the sake of it.

I think we have 4 real needs, and 3 day1 draft picks. Our needs are TE, WLB, LT and DE. I think we can get a decent TE on Day2 or trade for one, leaving 3 needs and 3 picks.

At this point I am looking at the fall off in talent levels and quite simply the fall off in talent is far greater at DE than it is at OT.

I am concerned that there is much greater chance of getting a bust at DE with #28 than there is getting a bust at #28 with an OT or LB. In fact I think we can get a starting LT at #42.

I think we could get Beatty or Britton at #28 or Meredith or Cadogan at #42
but the DE options at #28 scare me.

And that is why I am saying DE first, LB second, LT third.

This team must hit home with every one of these picks. I think you also underestimated the ability of Walker and the potential of Bell at LT, whilst at WLB we don't really have any talent and at DE we have an aging and often underachieving group.

that's kinda insane IMO

We have no clue what Bell is, and if he had all this talent then why didn't he get reps in 2008 ???????????? Did he even play last year at T. I can't even recall.

Walker is solid, but even with Walkr Bell and Chambers we still have a DIRE need for a top T talent...

I also fail to see why you don't believe in Monroe, J.Smith, or Oher.

If Oher had come out as a Junior he was a definitate top 10 prospect...

Monroe is a great pass blocker but there are questions about his run blocking (not good for Buffalo)

J.Smith is really athletic but a little raw and not a great run blocker either

I really think that if the Bills invest in an OT prospect he has to have all the qualities you need for a LT in Buffalo. You have to be a good run blocker and also be solid in pass pro and I think Andre Smith is the only one who has all that.

Bell has the same qualities as Monroe and Smith, just less experience. Peters was like that at one time as well.

I think your reading a little too much into those scouting reports. All of the top T's will do well, and get much better at run blocking. Oher and A.Smith are both projected at able to play G or T. you have ot have some run block capabilites to play G IMO

but to help put this into perspective about taking a T early....

Last year there were 7 T's drafted before pick #28.

If the Bills wait till #28 their prospects get a lot dimmer for immediate impact T.

This is what we could be left with at #28 if there is a run on T.

Can't let the Williams debacle affect drafting. Different players, different people. Smith has a mean streak and could be the most talented player in the draft. I'm more comfortable with our D from last year plus a few LB's coming back from IR than I am with our present OL.

When we failed to sign Peters I assumed the Bills have every intention of drafting a top T, otherwise our present crop of T's will leave us in the same shape we were last year. If I recall you and everyone else wasn't extremly thrilled with that even with Peters.

we have a better chance at landing a solid DE at #28 then we do a T IMO

Beatty is way to light IMO, and I can't say I know enough about Loadholt, but Loadholt might be gone since I think he gets picked up before Beatty... he appears to be a nasty run blocker.

I know Cadogan has moved up a number of drafts for someone wanting a LT.
I have seem him ranked ahead of Loadholt, Fulton and Tupou.

I like TJ Lang also.

I remember a time when Peters wasn't even playing and we were 4-0 with Walker at LT and Chambers at RT.....3

Hate to nitpick, but you could have put in Bell for Chambers and the result would have been the same.
We faced some of the worst teams during that timeframe, and our defense for the most part kept us in the games (I still believe Greer was the only reason we won the St. Louis game).

When we started to play 'real' teams, we went 0-6 in the division. Peters or no-Peters we werent a good team last year.

But there's no way we'll ever be a good team without a good set of bookends.

Peters barely played in his first game back.

WE HAVE NO PASS RUSH.

I remember that well too... but it was against inferior talent and we barely pulled 2 of those games off. Our D held those teams in check. it was the O that barely got enough points in those games, and the O depended upon a few ST TD's and a D TD in that streak.

What about that streak with Peters at LT where we sucked against better teams... How would Chambers and Walker have done there ??? Bell ???

Will see what happens. Both sides need some help, but we brought in Owens, and let Peters, Dockery, Fowler and Preston walk. We didn't have this exodus on the D side of the ball, so IMO it's pretty obvious we need to replace a couple of OL just to ensure we have quality starters and quality depth not depth posing as starters and no options to bail ourselves out if the typical Bills OL experiments fail yet again (last 10 years crappy OL decisions)

While I think I know what you're trying to get at, -my point is that we need to get better. Even half-assed, Peters was still equivalent to Chambers, Bell, etc... at their best last year.

And I dont think there's a single person here that wont agree with me that says that we need to be better to win. It's not a point of not getting worse, -it's all about getting better.

@11, it's a question of which position you value more: LT or DE? For me, -if both people are equal value, I'd take LT any day of the week.

My dream scenario is still Smith falling to us @11, and then going for best DE @ 28 (Michael Johnson, etc...)
