Yeah it's not like they can't scout while they're down there coaching or anything. It's not like they're going on a golf trip to get some rest and relaxation..

By going to the Senior Bowl, you get to "smell the breath" of the prospect and formulate an opinion while those players are running your system. So they are in fact focusing on the team during a week in January when you're getting ready for the draft as well!

“The thing that you get out of this is you get personal exposure to them,” said Gailey. “You can only get so much out of film and you can only get so much out of interviews at the NFL Combine. Dealing with them in a football atmosphere on a day to day basis shows you how much they can learn, if they pay attention to detail, who is a born leader and who is not, who is a good practice player. Those are all things you get by working with them on a daily basis.”

This is an excellent chance for this organization to see the upcoming talent in the draft up close. Love it!

Keep in mind Mallett, Newton, and Gabbert won't be there... they aren't seniors.

Guys like Love, Pouncey, Zeimba, Hudson, Gilbert, and Carpenter will all get a close look. A few guys who could be RT's.

Also Ponder, Hankerson, Stocker, and DJ Williams

Zeimba and Love are the two I hope Gailey and Co. look at the most. We need that new RT.

I really don't want Ponder.

Good to see. Any extra edge we can get out of it, will be welcome. Might not make so much difference with the #3 pick, but could have much more significance further down the draft, when harder decisions have to be made. Additional exposure to some guys who might be able to play, is no bad thing.

Additional exposure to some guys who might be able to play, is no bad thing.Absolutely. I haven't researched the drafts of the previous coaches. I'd be interested to see how well they did in the next draft, how many players they took from that roster, and how they turned out.

Someone interested in doing that homework for us?

I know the Bucs and the Bengals have thrived in the past on the Senior Bowl kids.

Data?
Wasn't volunteering to do the research, just going off of memory.

Here's why I said it:

http://www.seniorbowl.com/pdf/2009nfldraft.pdf

The two coaching staffs of the 2009 Under Armour Senior Bowl selected a combined six Senior Bowl players with the Cincinnati Bengals (North squad) choosing four and the Jacksonville Jaguars (South squad) choosing two.

Williams' ability to pick up a plethora of things Gruden was throwing at him on the practice field all week was one of the things that convinced the Bucs to take him with the fifth overall pick in the 2005 NFL Draft.

2010:

http://www.seniorbowl.com/pdf/2010%20NFL%20Draft-Recap.pdf

30 of the NFL’s 32 franchises selected at least one Senior Bowl player over the last three days, providing further proof of the strong relationship that exists between the league and the event. The Philadelphia Eagles chose the most Senior Bowlers with eight selections, followed by the New England Patriots with six and the Denver Broncos with five. A total of 10 teams selected four or more Senior Bowl players.

The Miami Dolphins, who coached the South squad in the 2010 Under Armour Senior Bowl, chose a total of four players from this year’s rosters. In fact, the Dolphins’ first four draft choices were players they evaluated in Mobile: Jared Odrick (1st round-Penn State), Koa Misi (2nd round-Utah), John Jerry (3rd round-Ole Miss) and A.J. Edds (4th round-Iowa).

2007:
http://www.seniorbowl.com/2007nfldraftrelease.asp

The 49ers served as one of the coaching staffs in the Senior Bowl for the second straight year in 2007, and ended up selecting six Senior Bowl players (more than any other NFL team) including the team's two first-round draft picks – Ole Miss linebacker Patrick Willis and Central Michigan offensive lineman Joe Staley.

Totally disagree. What better way to scout college players than to coach them up against great competition. I love the fact that they are doing this.

If Locker turns heads in this game & has a good combine expect the Seahawks to draft him in the 1st. Book it.

does coaching this game take away time from their team that just cleaned out their locker and left to be with their families?
