View Full Version : They were trading down if they couldn't get Kincaid

That's pretty much what Beane just said in his press conference. "If you'd of asked me 5 picks before us I'd of said we're trading down." Thought Kincaid would be picked. I'd love to know what the trade down would have been!

Same brother! BB said he was receiving trade down calls during the late teens/early 20s. He strictly preferred Kincaid to a trade down, to the extent he was willing to chip in a late 4th.

I probably would've taken the trade down, but he gets paid to make these decisions and wanted the impact player they had intuition on.

Points to Beane for switching up the justification this year. I don’t know if I could take another “he was the last guy on our board with a first round grade” line.

This is the point where "Beane's palms are getting sweaty and shaky, he's going to move up" is no longer funny.

Meh, we have had bottom of the draft guys not even make the team. Several in the last few years in fact. I would rather trade for a matchup problem over maybe a potential contributor in the bottom of the 4th round. I don't like trading the 4th but I can see the reasoning as we don't keep all the draft picks on the roster anymore.

Weeks ago I mentioned no ants in the pants this time please.

Having said that if they valued him that highly I guess I get it.

As it turns out the Jags were in the right seat not just once but twice.

There was interest for our 59th and 91st draft positions but Beane just said we would have had to drop down too far.

Kincaid dropped into their laps. He was expected to go in the top 15.

Getting him at #25 was one of the biggest steals of the first round.

I am glad they got a player. They seem to overthink the 'build your roster through the draft' on a regular basis and end up squandering our draft capital.

Would have rather traded down

I’m not.

The addition of Kincaid is exactly what this team needed from the first round. A bonafide offensive weapon that provides what was missing last season and will almost undoubtably make the team better.

With Torrence falling to the Bills at #59, this is the best frist two picks since 2018 for the Bills.

They addressed THE two biggest needs for this season and going forward.

He said that as well. And they were apparently trying to trade up for Addison but no one wanted to budge since they all wanted WRs. So he got the best receiver instead.

I wanted Addison. So badly that I could taste it. My heart sunk when his name was called, despite the fact that it was almost inevitable when the run on the only four WR’s worth a first round pick commenced.

But, I had tunnel vision and kept my eye only on WR’s. Never gave any TE or Kincaid a thought.

That was a BIG mistake. And not the kind of mistake that the Bills were going to make.

As I posted elsewhere...but worth repeating....

Yea, it was a joke about how magically the Bills board always falls to only one player who is left with a 1st Round grade. I wouldn’t have minded Addison, all depends on that cost.

The fact that they traded up both years leads me to believe that they are being truthful when they say that. And trading up for Addison would have cost another pico, if not their 3rd rounder, but nobody was willing to trade down.

I put no truth or value in what a GM says about their board publicly. I’m perfectly fine with him being deceptive about it. There is no gain in being honest.

True. But actions speak louder than words. I don't for one second believe Beane would trade an extra pick to go up and get a player who didn't have a 1st round grade. If he had stayed put and selected a player, I'd be more skeptical.

I don’t think there is a question that he had a first round grade on Kincaid.

It’s not “magically”. That’s what happens when your team has a LOT of wins and drafts in the bottom quarter of the first round.

The whole NFL “parity” goal is based on that concept.

As I have said in other thread, I wanted Addison so badly I could taste it. But, once the run on WR’s started at #20, it became impossible for the Bills to move up to get him. None of those four teams from #20 to #23 were going to trade down.

In retrospect, (again, as I have already said I was guilty of tunnel vision looking only at WR’s) now that I have given Kincaid the close look that he deserves (and what the Bills obviously did), I prefer him over any of the (mostly) smurf WR’s....especially Addison, who at only 173 Lbs could expect to be manhandled over the middle.

We’ve already tried a smurf slot McKenzie at only 5’8” and 173 Lbs. There is a reason that Travis Kielce has been one of the consistently best pass catcher for KC even before Mahomes came along.

Since 2014 (he was injured his rookie year and only played in one game) Kelsey has been #1 or #2 in number of receptions and receiving yards. Seven of those nine seasons he was #1 in reception. Five seasons #1 in receiving yards. Five of those year he was both #1 in receptions and yards.

Travis Kelsey is 6’5” and 250 Lbs.

Not saying that he will have a cheer like Kelsey, but, Kincaid is widely touted as the best pass catcher in the 2023 draft class....and NO ONE is going to push 6’4” 246 Lb Kincaid around.

The 2 trade downs should net us picks #180 and #189 (approximately).

The Texans are still a dumpster fire and the Rams aren't much better.

We should also get a 3rd round compensatory pick #100 (approximately).

2024 is looking pretty good on the draft front.

Definitely. But again, I don't see Beane wasting a decent pick trading-up for a player (Elam) they had graded as a 2nd rounder.

Which teams won 2023 NFL Draft? Eagles, Texans and Lions headline my nine favorite prospect hauls (https://www.nfl.com/news/which-teams-won-2023-nfl-draft-eagles-texans-and-lions-headline-my-nine-favorite)

Brandon Beane wasn't messing around. Dalton Kincaid (https://www.nfl.com/prospects/dalton-kincaid/32004b49-4e06-9130-e563-7edd228031c8) is a perfect weapon at tight end for Josh Allen (https://www.nfl.com/players/josh-allen-4/), and the Bills GM didn't leave the selection up to chance. Knowing Dallas would also be a fine fit for the Utah product, Beane leapfrogged the Cowboys (https://www.nfl.com/news/bills-trade-up-with-jaguars-to-select-utah-te-dalton-kincaid-at-no-25-overall-in) and got his guy.

Think about some of Buffalo's losses last year when the Bills stalled in the red zone. The Week 3 defeat in Miami (https://www.nfl.com/games/bills-at-dolphins-2022-reg-3) and Week 10 setback vs. Minnesota (https://www.nfl.com/games/vikings-at-bills-2022-reg-10) come to mind. Allen and Stefon Diggs (https://www.nfl.com/players/stefon-diggs/) needed help. Kincaid will supply it. And he will take heat off Gabe Davis (https://www.nfl.com/players/gabe-davis/) and Dawson Knox (https://www.nfl.com/players/dawson-knox/), allowing those two pass catchers to produce more efficiently.

Another stellar Bills pick: mauling guard O'Cyrus Torrence (https://www.nfl.com/prospects/o-cyrus-torrence/3200544f-5269-4111-dab8-fa9ef6354288). Beane got a Round 1-caliber blocker -- and Bucky Brooks' top-rated interior offensive lineman (https://www.nfl.com/news/bucky-brooks-top-five-2023-nfl-draft-prospects-by-position-3-0) -- near the end of Round

Elam was rated highly and they picked late in the second IIRC . So they moved up and assured the pick.

Not sure how they "panicked a little" when receivers were flying off the board and the Cowboys were rumored to be hot after Kincaid. To me it's smart to ensure you get a 1st round talent so late in an otherwise weak draft, especially when it only costs you a late 4th rounder.

They really loved the pick .... but they make a move after the WR's went four str8.

Panic not really but let's just say incentivized in the right direction to be more accurate.

The 4 str8 WR's forced us to actually make the smarter choice JMO.
