Maybe I'm reading into this, but it sure sounds like a cheap shot:
Down this page here (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2001757) it says:
With the pusuit of Garcia, the Bucs are signaling that they aren't ready to hand over the reigns to third-year quarterback Chris Simms.
"We don't give guys starting jobs here just because Buffalo is giving their guy [J.P. Losman] their job," Gruden told the two Tampa-area papers. "Chris Simms has to earn that right. He has to earn the right to be a starter. He hasn't done that yet.

The way it sounds, hes stockpiling QBs in TB. That would push Simms to #3. Hes just jealous Simms isnt as good as JP. If your not secure with your young guy being at least a #2, then thats their problem.

Either way it doesn't matter. There was no way Drew was going to accept fighting for the job with his "this is my team" attitude.
Gruden has more things to worry about than what the Bills are doing. living here in Tampa Bay the only thing I see he did was take Dungys team and win the SB and then dismantle the whole mess including GM Rich Mckay. If he doesn't produce in the next 2 seasons he will be gone.

I just read this in the Tampa Tribue 1 second ago. I was just about to post it on the site. Thats why Buff will come down here and manhandle GRUDEN and this struggiling organization.....

He has a whole other situation there because Simms was a 2nd rounder, and he isn't making a tremendous amount of money.

I think Gruden had a lot to take on with the Tampa job. He was running dungy's team and it takes time to build a team of your own. His whole cap has been tied down to the deffense and just now they are getting out of that.

Maybe Gruden should have mentioned the Giants and Eli Manning rather than us. After all, he doesn't know whether JP will produce and be like Ben in Pittsburgh, or if he will go through substantial growing pains. It is uncertain and for him to say that makes him sound stupid. He does not apparently know that sticking with DB would have been a far worse decision - and if he doesn't understand the characteristics of why that decision was made, he shouldn't be commenting on it!!!

Gruden is a notorious ass and hates playing younger players, I would not be surprised to see Simms leave TB and be a huge success elsewhere.

It's obvious to me that when another HC from another conference is talking about our QB, he's jealous. He wishes that he had natrual talent at the QB position on his roster. He's to blame, so he can go suck ass with whoever he chooses.

I really don't give a crap what Gruden says. He knows his team. He sees Simms play every day. He knows simms has not earned the right to be the starter. He doesn't know what JP is doing in practice or in the film room so how would he know if he earned the spot or not.

He won with a team that wasn't even his and he won by playing against a team that he created and knows very well. I think he's an overrated ass, but that's just MO.

actully he was taken with the last pick of the third round, i remember cause i wanted the bills to grab him a few pics before, but they grabbed angelo crowell instead.

To me this sounds less like a jab at Buffalo and more like a way to justify signing an aging QB to the media vs. giving a promising youngster a chance.

I was hoping for the very same thing. Instead of a big, strong-armed QB who very well may have made the drafting of JP unnecessary, we got a nice backup linebacker.
Although in all fairness, Simms has not exactly blossomed into a star, either.

I think that you guys are looking at this from the wrong angle. I suspect that the article was geared to make Gruden look as if he was taking a shot at Buffalo, when it was probably a reporter that brought up the issue, something like "Buffalo has decided to go ahead and hand the offense to their young QB. Is this something that you and your administration might be looking into?"

I heard that on the radio. I agree it was a cheap shot, but so what. Gruden doesn't have to mimic Buffalo. We don't have to do it his way either. His way worked once in Tampa, but since the Super Bowl Gruden hasn't done anything.

Sounds to me like he said JP has earned his job and Simms hasn't....and fans shouldn't think that JP getting the job neccessarily creates a trend that is going to be followed.

Why does everyone have thin skin over what Jon Gruden says? He's only pointing out the facts. The job was handed to J.P. solely because we needed to go into a different direction and he was drafted as our next franchise qb. It was handed to him because the coaching staff liked his attitude and the way he started maturing. Gruden prefers to have veteran qb's over young qb's. Gannon? Johnson? Now possibly Garcia. Griese isn't that young either. Simms hasn't played well enough to supplant Brian Griese. This is what he meant he hasn't earned it. Who cares what anyone else says about Losman and our team. Losman should prove he was the right choice. Actions speak louder than words.

I love how people discredit Gruden. You guys are saying he was GIVEN a championship team. Well, they weren't a championship team until he got there. Plus, the team he left, the Raiders, were also in the Super Bowl that year. He may have come into a good situation in Tampa, but he is the reason they went over the top. Plus, he rebuilt Oakland from the gorund up. He is a good coach believe it or not.
He does have a propensity to play veterans as opposed to young players, but that is his deal. I find it curious that he pointed out Losman, but perhaps he feels that Losman didn't EARN the position like he said.
Knowing Gruden personally, like I do, I would disagree with anyone who called him a jerk. He has always been very friendly in our discussions and is a dedicated family man. My sister actually used to babysit his sons when he lived out here in the Bay Area.
Anyhow, I wouldn't worry about it. What is done is done and Losman is your QB, for better or worse.
