(Oct. 18, 2005) -- Tim Rattay (http://www.nfl.com/players/playerpage/187628) was acquired by Tampa Bay as the Buccaneers (http://www.nfl.com/teams/news/TB) addressed their shortage at quarterback after Brian Griese injured his knee (http://www.nfl.com/teams/story/TB/8972136).
The Bucs sent an undisclosed draft choice to the San Francisco 49ers (http://www.nfl.com/teams/news/SF) for the six-year veteran, who lost his job in San Francisco after four weeks to top overall draft pick Alex Smith (http://www.nfl.com/players/playerpage/552642). The transaction beat the NFL trading deadline of 4 p.m. Tuesday.
To make room for Rattay on the active roster, the Bucs released rookie fullback Rick Razzano (http://www.nfl.com/players/playerpage/552620).
Griese tore knee ligaments in the victory over Miami and will be out for a lengthy time. Chris Simms (http://www.nfl.com/players/playerpage/396084) took over for Griese as the Buccaneers beat the Dolphins 27-13.

I guess that San Fran has not only given up on the season, but is certain that Alex Smith is their guy. I'm not so sure that was such a good idea.

And when Smith gets his experience this year, he will be Eli next season. And then the 9ers will be on their way up again.

Considering he only started one game and played in another in TB before he was injured and replaced by Griese....I would expect Simms is going to play and he just might perform quite well. The time he had he didn't do poorly at all...he just lost his job because Griese was playing well. Simms is probably going to start showing up now that he's needed IMO.

Says who?

Alex Smith looked average to bad in preseason, and looked very bad against the Colts in his first start.

Whos to say this kid will ever be good?

The situation in San Francisco is much different from here, so don't try and compare the two.

I think it's hillarious that people think ANYONE can be successful as long as they get a year of crap behind them based on Eli, Peyton, yada yada yada....it's hillarious because those guys needed to have some bad seasons because most of them were on horrible teams that were building up around a QB...and there are zillions of guys who have had their starts and NEVER seen any success whatsover. If the only requirement was to have a crappy season I'd be glad to go out there and make a few million having a crappy season in my first season just to come back the next year and be the next Peyton Manning.

It IS a requirement however to see if he will be any good. Otherwise you are prolonging finding out and then we will be looking for another QB in two or three years instead of one. Just puts the future even more into the future.

Where did I compare our situation to the 9ers? Show me. Seems to me I compared the Giants and the 9ers. :idunno:

I think it was a great move by the 49ers. This season is gone for them. They do not have the talent level and need to go through a rebuilding phase. What a better time than to let Alex Smith gain some experience and get extra draft picks to rebuild a new and stronger team.

I don't know if I would say great move. It might not hurt them, but it's most likely far from great.

Does anyone else think that pussy ass Zack Thomas rolled up on Griese's leg on purpose?

I didn't see the game, but you wouldn't be the first to say that it looked intentional. What happened exactly?

He jacked him up up bro, that's what happened. It was almost like the hit Roethlisberger took in the Charger's game last Monday night. Did you see that one? The only difference is that Thomas took it a little further when he rolled into Griese's leg after the dive. It was quite obvious that he was trying to hurt him. It's like he dove and missed and just as Griese released the ball, Thomas rolls into him shoulder first. I guess that is the best way I can describe it.

I'm not seeing it out of Alex Smith. I don't think he has the physical tools to make it in the NFL myself. And yes, I know I shouldn't judge before he gets some games under his belt, but I just don't think he can make the throws or the athletic plays to do it. Great move for the Bucs, keeps them as a playoff team, imo.

My God! What a genius! Seriously bro, you should consider applying for 49ers GM. Imagine? You could have saved them MILLIONS. MILLIONS I say! I can't BELIEVE they didn't consult with you first. What were they thinking? YOU my friend, you alone could have prevented the annihilation of the 49ers franchise as we know it. Bill Walsh himself would be proud. Hell we all are. To be posting in the presence of such intelligence and expertise?

I am honored. Truly. Thank you sir for your incredible knowledge and observation. Come to think of it, to HELL with the 49ers, maybe you could come work at One Bill's Drive? We sure could use an EXPERT evaluator of talent such as yourself.

Yea. It's called an opinion. Not ONCE did I say whether they should have drafted him or not. Or what I would do if I were GM. I'm not a GM, I'm a damn music major in college. I just said that I don't think he has the arm to make it in the NFL. I even said that judging him before he gets more experience is something I probably shouldn't do. I'm sorry that for some reason you assumed I was trying to be uber-GM.

Wow, it looks like the NFL will never see a good QB again. It seems QBs have to be good right away for them to have any hope of ever being good. Yup, instant success or bust, that's the way it is.

I know, right?! If you don't come into the NFL producing high numbers you are branded a bust. People are too reactionary and impulsive here. Their opinions move with the wind. Maybe we just have alot of young, inexperienced people here - I don't know. But anyone who brands a new QB a bust after just a few games doesn't know much about football!

Ok man...no need to get nuts. But you said it yourself. You're a music major, so WTF do you know about what kind of arm it takes to "make it" in the NFL. I'm sorry but that was a REALLY REALLY dumb ass thing to say. You make dumb ass comments like that and you're going to get reponses like this. No offense bro. I was only expressing MY opinion too.

I think you nailed it right there bro. YOUNG and INEXPERIENCED. The fast food generation. We want everything RIGHT NOW goddamit!

I have said this many times before, Roethlisberger has ALOT to do with this type of expectation.

No, what I'm pissed about is I make an opinion and you basically call me a dumb ass and act like I'm not intitled to my opinions. Yes, you attacked my post... but you attacked me too and no one said a damn thing about it. That's what pissed me off.

AndreReed83
10-19-2005, 01:35 PM
And why is it a dumb ass opinion? Because it's different from yours? I said I don't like Alex Smith's chances to be a good NFL quaterback because of his arm strength and athletic ability. I also said I probably shouldn't judge him before he plays more games, but it doesn't take NFL games for me to decide if I like his arm strength or not. I'm sorry it's being mistaken for me saying any young QB who struggles early won't make it. I DID NOT SAY THAT. Plus, what exactly do YOU do that makes you an expert on football and be able to call my opinions stupid?

it's good to see you're looking at the play objectively... gruden said it wasn't intentional, btw. but what does he know? he doesn't even post at BZ!
