Ravens assistant coach charged with threatening woman

    BALTIMORE (AP)—
Baltimore Ravens assistant coach Bennie Thompson was charged Monday with violating a protective order after a woman told police he threatened her over the phone.
Thompson, one of coach Brian Billick's 14 assistant coaches, was released on his own recognizance at a bail review hearing Monday morning, said Thompson's attorney, Terry Lavenstein.

The woman Thompson called Sunday night, Nikki Walden, is a friend of a former girlfriend of Thompson's, Lavenstein said. The attorney said he believes the charges will not stand, because the protective order signed by a judge last week applies not to Walden but to Thompson's former girlfriend.

Walden told police Thompson threatened to kill her. Thompson's attorney said the former Ravens player didn't threaten Walden when he called her Sunday night.

"He spoke to her. She says it was a threat, but he swears he didn't even raise his voice. The call certainly wasn't to harass her in any way," Lavenstein said.

Ravens' Thompson: Charge 'absolutely not true'

Ravens special teams assistant coach Bennie Thompson Tuesday denied allegations that he threatened to kill a city woman during a phone conversation Sunday.

Thompson was arrested Sunday night on charges of telephone harassment and violating the terms of a temporary protective order granted to Nancy Lee, 35, of Columbia, an ex-girlfriend. He was released on his own recognizance after a brief bail hearing at the Central Booking and Intake Center Monday.

Though the protective order was obtained by Lee, Thompson's telephone call was allegedly to Nikki Walden of Northwest Baltimore, a friend of Lee's. Walden told police Thompson called her about 9:25 p.m. and threatened to kill her. She also said Thompson called several other times and hung up.

    Ravens' Thompson is jailed, released

Ravens assistant coach Bennie Thompson was released from jail yesterday on his own recognizance after being charged Sunday with harassing and threatening to kill a city woman during a phone conversation.

Thompson, a special teams assistant who was a Pro Bowl special teams player, appeared during a brief bail hearing at the Central Booking and Intake Center. His lawyer said Thompson, 40, a former Raven who joined the team's coaching staff in 2000 after an 11-year NFL career, had done nothing wrong.

The charges center on a phone conversation between Thompson and Nikki Walden of Northwest Baltimore on Sunday night, police said.

    Bennie Thompson?

Wasnt he the guy who had his wife and young son murdered some years back? I want to say it happened in Louisianna or Mississippi. Maybe I have him confused with someone else.
