True fans want wins, not draft picks.
Zero surprise.
They have seen a lot of Manuel due to the injury. This is about the HC getting a real good look at the competitor as soon as possible.
Like it or not this is likely Kolb's job to lose... A new HC needs to show everyone he will do whatever it takes to win and furthermore that he will start the guy that gives him the best chance to win.
It takes balls and it's very risk to start a rookie when the other guy has way more experience. It's a conservative, BS, way to look at it but I can understand a new HC not taking the big risk.
That said, Marrone would probably secretly like to see this question answer itself even as soon as after this next game.
Kolb only needs to be as productive maybe even a bit less so to keep the competition going. The vet experience means a lot to a new HC.

I guess my thing is that Manuel played well. Kolb is not here to start for the next 4-5 years or more. So why bother? Rookies have been starting lately, and starting with better success than in past years. Starting with Stafford in Detroit I feel like rookie QBs have gotten a better grip on playing in the NFL. Why not just roll with Manuel and let him progress the best way possible?
I'm assuming that the coaching staff told him he'd have a fair chance at the starting position regardless of who or when they drafted a QB. So I'd say this is following through with their word to Kolb and allowing him to actually compete now that he's ready to go.

ej did a little above average in his preseason debutt. really only ran against the ones, did a nice job in the two minute against the threes, no big mistakes - a little better than i would have expect for a rookie first start
but they gotta see where kolb is against the ones. id prolly start ej next game and have him play the half, then kolb for the finale and probably start him at the opener
so rules judge mh so it shall be
This, and why not ? The obvious is that Manuel is raw, the 2 min drill against 3rd stringers was against 3rd stringers, but Manuel did not look lost and out of place for a wonder. He looked like he belongs in the NFL, he wasn't in over his head. Kolb proved that once, give him a shot, and it brings out competitive in Manuel, and Kolb, theoretically fighting for his professional life.
This season is just practice again. Might be fun though.
New boss, same as the old boss...cmon Marrone. Shape up!
Lehner's history. He just doesn't know it yet.

My only hope is that they don't want EJ to think that he's being handed the starting job. There is something to be said for making him earn it, or at the very least make him think he is earning it. Not starting in one preseason game is not going to be the differencemaker in his career, but letting him start establishing bad habits of thinking things will come to him unearned could hurt him in the long-run.
*looks around*
I mean, EJ EJ EJ EJ EJ EJ EJ EJ EJ EJ

Shape up ? He said that there would be an open competition for the starters job and he should have his decision by 10 days before the opener, unless one of them really separates himself from the others. No QB has clearly looked better than another, but you want Marrone to go against what he told the players and take Kolb out of the competition two weeks into camp, because you don't like him. That will really go over great with the team when he doesn't stick to what he said. Losing credibility with your players is not a way to "shape up."

Completely disagree that it's Kolb's job to lose. Furthermore, completely disagree that it has anything to with Marrone lacking the balls to start a rookie. It's simply Kolb's turn. Until Kolb missed a bunch of time, the plan was to start Kolb the first pre-season game and EJ the second. Marrone is simply giving Kolb his shot. Nothing more. Nothing less.

Kolb will get 3-5 series, EJ will get Qtrs 2 and 3 with Tuel taking the 4th.
Not a huge surprise. People want to anoint EJ the starter based on his draft position and one TD drive. We need to slow down a little bit.
COMING SOON...

I hate this decision.
its not based on one of production... by reports from camp and his performance on the field Sunday, Tuel deserves a look.
It is what it is though... this is Kolb's chance as far as Im concerned.
he either shows something or buhbye
