Gold For Canada.... Bronze for US... Silver to Russia..... For Mens..
Womens... Gold... I Dunno... USA or Canada (18 to effing Zip last nite!!), and whoever survives the USA/Canada Slaughters will get Bronze, Prolly Sweden.
You better have a lucky rabbit foot or something - no way U.S. gets to the Gold game ahead of Sweden, Russia, or Canada.Originally Posted by SkateZilla
I'm seeing Canada v. Russia for the Gold/Silver. U.S. will play for Bronze against Sweden.
Canada v. U.S. for Gold/Silver in Women's.
Does it make any sense for NHL players to be playing in the Olympics? What happens to the Sabres playoff chances if Miller or another star player gets injured, for example?
Mmm what do you mean -- the Olympics are GREAT for the NHL. It raises awareness for the game. If U.S.A. by a miracle makes it to the Gold medal game against Canada, the NHL will be boosted big-time.Originally Posted by Cleve
Miller could get injured - yea - but whatever. Odds are he'll be fine.

The Olympics would just be another college hockey tournament if it wasn't for the NHL. Keep NHL players in the Olympics.
It doesn't make sense that the X-Gamers are in the Olympics either. Sean White makes 9 million a year....not exactly what I would call an 'amateur'. But the Olympics 'is what it is'.Originally Posted by Cleve
It's just like with hockey -- you send your best in the sport. If the NHL werent to send their best, and snowboarding weren't to send its best, then what's the point?Originally Posted by SaviorEdwards

You don't remember when the Olympics were good - for instance, 1980 and the U.S. Hockey team, do you?Originally Posted by DMBcrew36

We see the best in amateur competition at the World Juniors every year. Now it's time to see the best in the world of the highest level players.Originally Posted by Cleve
I don't understand why you're complaining. "Corporate greed and excess!?!!?? OH NO!!!! GLOBALIZATION!!!!?!?! MERCY ME!!!!"
You should just boycott the entire Olympics, then, because it's no different than any other event - it's the best in the world. If I wanted to watch amateur hockey, I'll tape one of my men's league games or go to a Niagara University game. People want to see the best hockey players in the world, competing for their countries.

For many decades the U.S. Olympic team was all amateurs. In fact, the celebrated and legendary 1980 Team USA Hockey Team was ALL AMATEUR, and yet their victory in the Lake Placid Olympics remains one of the greatest U.S. Olympic moments of all time.
Sounds like you're an old fart who wants to hold on to stale memories. I know that it was all amateurs until 1998 (except that the Russia team the U.S. beat in 1980 was a PROFESSIONAL team), and I'm shaking my head because you lack the understanding that I don't give one crap about amateurs - I want the best players in the world playing. I don't want to watch amateurs. AGAIN, if I wanted to watch amateurs, I'd stay at the rink after my 9:15 game tonight and watch other mens league games.Originally Posted by Cleve

I like the mask.
In 50 years, there won't be a single one of your 'professional' hockey teams competing in the Olympics that will be revered or honored like the all amateur 1980 team. Your pro teams will all be forgotten, but the miracle 1980 team will always be revered.Originally Posted by DMBcrew36
Yeah, I've found it to be pretty "awesome" to watch some multi-millionaire professional knuckle-head like "Sir Charles" stiff arm amateur Korean basketball players. Wow, it's SO good that we eschewed 100 years of Olympic tradition for commercialism and the almighty (and quick, don't forget the quick!) buck.
We used to vilify the Red Soviets for doing the same sort of thing in the Olympics that we now openly embrace - and that is truly disgusting.

But don't compare Olympic hockey to Olympic basketball, because the basketball is completely lopsided - it isn't really a fair competition at all. Meanwhile, Olympic hockey provides the best competition in the world with powerhouse teams being furnished by Canada, Russia, USA, Finland, Czech, and Sweden.
And in case you haven't noticed - NHL players want to play in the Olympics and REFUSE to be denied playing in them. Ovechkin says he doesn't care what the NHL says - he WILL play at the 2014 games in Russia. So trying to keep NHLers out is moot considering the nightmare that would result between the NHL and NHLPA if the NHL tries to stop players from participating.
Regardless of how you feel, you'd be a fool not to watch THE BEST players in the world going against each other for their countries. It will be even better at this Olympics because it is on a North American size rink, not Olympic size.

It really was a david versus goliath game.

In the end, there are only three liberal archetypes: The fools, the beneficiaries and the crooks.
"If you build a man a fire, he'll be warm for a day, but if you set a man on fire, he'll be warm for the rest of his life"Optyimus Ignorus Realityious!
"Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, to assure the survival and the success of liberty.
- John F. Kennedy, January 20, 1961
To live in the presence of great truths and eternal laws,
to be led by permanent ideals -
that is what keeps a man patient
when the world ignores him,
and calm and unspoiled when the world praises him. -- Honore De Balzac
Anyone here old enough to have seen the 1980 miracle game?
